Scandalous Seduction With her oldest sister married and her youngest sister celebrating her betrothal, most predict that Lady Tabitha Bartley, the bookish, plain sister, is doomed to be left on the shelf. She has seldom been noticed by the town until several bored gentlemen make an innocent wager regarding her and the Earl of Sterling Court. Lady Tabitha overhears their conversation and decides to beat them at their own game. But she will take it a step further and seduce Lord Sterling. She has read all about seduction from the books in her father's library. Since she doesn't expect to marry, this is probably her only chance to have a tantalizing sexual encounter. First, she must win the original wager and then make one of her own. Will Lord Sterling accept her challenge? What will be the prize for winning? And more importantly, can a lady seduce a gentleman and still be considered a lady? Genre: Historical, Regency Length: 36,346 words

Chapter One At the advanced age of twenty-six, Miss Tabitha Bartley should have learned not to eavesdrop. She’d gone outdoors to hide from the crowd of people celebrating her youngest sister, Edna’s, betrothal. Escape from the party also helped her avoid her mother’s sad glances of disappointment over Tabitha’s lack of a husband. Mother’s disapproval always made her feel guilty. But not remorseful enough to search for a suitor. Edna was six years younger, and Mama had hoped to see Tabitha married long before this. Of course, Tabitha had worked hard at remaining unwed. She had hidden behind her books, her glasses, and her drab appearance, and had succeeded very well. Her only regret was Mama’s unhappiness. She took the book she’d been reading for the past few days and slipped out a side door. The garden, quiet after the crowded drawing room, brought a sense of peace. Only an occasional honeybee buzzing around the wall of old scrub roses disturbed the silence. Settling on a stone bench under the shade of the wall, Tabitha relaxed and opened her book. “What a tiresome party.” A strong male voice carried over the wall. “If not for old Langston being such a good friend I’d never have been seen at such a gathering. What we need to make the time go

faster is a wager.” Silence followed this announcement. Tabitha found herself more intrigued by the conversation she overheard than what she’d started to read. The men obviously had no idea anyone else was nearby. A deeper, sexier voice answered the first man. “What do you have in mind, Trout?” “This will be the second Bartley sister to wed, and she’s the youngest of the three. From my understanding, the middle sister has never received an offer. A much too boring, bluestocking lady to interest most men of our station.” Another voice spoke up. “Don’t think she minds, old man. Let’s make a wager on you, Sterling. There aren’t many women who can resist responding to your overtures. I wager five pounds you can’t get her to warm up to you.” “Warm up?” The sexier man’s voice also had a ring of authority. “Ah, come on, Sterling. Have a little fun. All you have to do is show interest in her, and if she shows any interest in you, you’ve won the bet.” Several other voices spoke up at once. “I’m in.” “Me, too.” Tabitha wasn’t sure if she wanted to give them a good set down or laugh at their antics. Really, they were so typical of most of the young men she’d met during her seasons in town. Their limited interests consisted of horses, bets, racing, gambling, and eating. Not necessarily in that particular order. No wonder she had no interest in getting married, in spite of her mother’s insistence that a lady had only one option, to become a wife. The voice of the man they’d called Sterling broke into her thoughts. “All right. The weekend does promise to be barely tolerable. I must warn you, gentlemen, I intend to win.” “Hah, have you met Miss Bartley yet?” “Once, briefly, several years ago. I have to admit I don’t really remember anything about her. I haven’t had the pleasure of renewing

our acquaintance since I’ve arrived.” “It likely won’t be a pleasure. She didn’t get any of the other sisters’ beauty.” Tabitha listened as they moved along and out of hearing distance. That last comment had hurt. No need to say she wasn’t pretty. Mama had often said that a person never heard good of themselves if they eavesdropped on others’ conversations. She was quite right. Comparing her to her sisters had smarted more than she expected. Her book no longer held her interest. She closed the volume of sonnets, carefully slipped around the hedges, and made it inside without being seen. Thoughts of the endlessly long dinner planned for tonight made her sigh. If only she could feign a debilitating illness. Nevertheless, she didn’t want to further dishearten her mother. Hilda had a hot bath waiting and Tabitha’s gown laid across the bed for the evening. “Thought this water was going to be a mite cold if you didn’t come soon,” Hilda snipped. “Never seen a girl so disinterested in parties and company. Just not natural,” she fussed as she helped unfasten Tabitha’s gown. Tabitha ignored her words. Over the years, first as her nanny and now as her personal maid, Hilda had never hesitated to say what she thought. Sinking into the now tepid water, she glanced around at Hilda. “Face the truth, Hilda, a plain girl doesn’t stand a chance at getting a man’s interest. I’m too old, on the shelf, as they say. It’s a complete waste of time to even try. Besides, it would be too embarrassing to be rejected.” “That’s not so. For one, you only need those glasses for reading. Yet you wear them whenever you go out or your family has company in. You have lovely eyes. You should let those dandy gentlemen at least see them.” “But they aren't interested. Look at the rest of me. I’m very ordinary.” Hilda held out a towel as Tabitha stepped out of the tub. “Also not

true. If you really want to change your appearance, I can help.” Tabitha thought of the men’s conversation that she’d overheard from over the wall. It was as if those men had thrown down a gauntlet with their caviler wager. She’d always been too competitive for her own good. Perhaps she’d join in on their little bet as a silent competitor. Lord Sterling would not get her to warm up to him. How arrogant of him to think he could get her to fawn at his feet so easily. “I don’t intend to change anything about myself for anyone. Help me into my gown. I’m going to be late. Mama will be more displeased than usual.” Hilda shook her head, but helped Tabitha into her plain blue gown. The modest neckline had a bit of lace trim, and more of the barely noticeable lace edged the puffy sleeves. Otherwise, the gown was unremarkable. As usual, she wore her hair in a tight bun. Wrapping a silver shawl around her shoulders, she reluctantly walked downstairs. Lord Sterling wouldn’t tempt her in the least, nor, she admitted reluctantly, would she tempt him except for that foolish wager. **** Richard Featherstone, Earl of Sterling Court, stood at the fireplace with several friends. He barely followed their conversation. Stupid! That was the only explanation for him agreeing to the wager this afternoon. A few years ago, he might have enjoyed the fun of it, but lately he’d found himself tired of the games and nightly outings of gambling and spirits. He’d spent six months watching his beloved father waste away, and the past year mostly staying at his estate handling business and being supportive of his mother. The experience had sobered him up in many ways. But, why had he gone along with the wager today? He glanced around each time another guest entered the room. He held a dim hope

that the middle daughter, of his host and hostess, might not make an appearance. “There she is at the door.” Trout nodded in the direction of the open doorway. Damnation. Now he’d have to go through with this foolish bet. “Absolutely nothing to interest a man,” Trout said. “As you can see, she’s plain, and if the gossip is accurate, she’s stubborn. Her poor mother has little control of her.” “You seem to know her well for someone who interests you not at all,” Sterling said. “Her future brother-in-law and I have had some long drinking bouts. When he’s not waxing poetic over his future bride, he talks about the family. He said, ‘she’s too intelligent for her own good.’” Sterling noted Miss Bartley’s hesitation at the door. An annoyed look crossed her face briefly before she took a deep breath and stepped over the threshold. She joined a group including her married sister and the bride-tobe. No, she did not resemble her sisters at all. They were tall, slender blondes. She must be at least two inches shorter, and her hair was an interesting shade of golden brown. He liked it. But, she dressed so plainly, one might assume she was a poor relation. Her sister’s conversation did not appear to hold her interest. She stood to the side, discreetly studying the other guests. When her eyes met his, he raised an eyebrow. Her lips very briefly curved into a half smile, and then she moved on in her perusal of the room. Perhaps this wager might be fun after all. Intelligent women held a certain fascination and something about Miss Bartley definitely intrigued him. The butler announced dinner. On impulse, Sterling excused himself from his position in the line of guests preparing to enter the dining room. Miss Bartley had stayed to the back of the group which gave him a perfect opportunity to make his first move toward winning the foolish wager. He was still annoyed with himself for getting

involved. When she stepped into the line, he quickly joined her. “May I have the pleasure of escorting you?” “Have we met, my lord?” Sterling made a deep bow. “A long time ago. May I renew our introduction?” He smiled and waited for her answer. She bent her head to the side as her gaze studied him from his head to his feet. He couldn’t resist laughing. “Do I meet your approval?” “You will do. I’m Tabitha Bartley.” “The future bride’s sister. I’m Richard Featherstone.” “Let me think. Probably not plain Richard Featherstone. Perhaps you are being modest, Lord Sterling, Earl of Sterling Court, if I’m not mistaken. I vaguely remember meeting you previously. More recently, I’ve read about your involvement in the field of astronomy.” He put out his arm. “I’m surprised. Few people are aware of my particular studies. You must tell me sometime how you found out. But for now, we must join the others, or we might raise a few eyebrows.” “Hardly, my lord. I am the plain, bluestocking sister. No one would ever believe I’d dally with a gentleman.” **** Except her mother, who raised her eyebrows when Tabitha and Lord Sterling were the last to enter the dining room. Tabitha thanked him and moved quickly into her seat beside Mary, her married sister. “Lord Sterling escorted you to the dining room,” Mary commented, a teasing note in her voice. “He must have changed his place in line.” She glanced across at the earl. “He appears quite interested in you. He’s looking in this direction.” “I’m sure he’s admiring one of the other ladies. Men do not show any interest in me, nor I in them.” Tabitha felt a twinge at lying to her

sister. She’d never shown any attention to a man before. Yet, there was something about Lord Sterling. Not just his good looks, but a shine of intelligence in those dark green eyes. Other men were intelligent, she supposed. Still, most worked hard at not showing it, at least, in her opinion. She quickly reminded herself not to forget Lord Sterling’s regard was in winning the wager, not because he found her appealing. At that dismal thought, she lowered her head and began to eat, determined to ignore him for the rest of the evening. Tabitha had hoped to slip away after dinner, but her mother came to her side and walked with her into the lounge. The men were settled in the dining room with their port. “Come with me,” her mother ordered. She led Tabitha away from the group toward the floor length side windows. Once they had walked far enough to have privacy, her mother turned her back to the others and asked, “How did you happen to enter late and on the arm of Lord Sterling?” “Coincidence, we were both at the end of the line.” “But you were noticeably later than the couple before you.” “We spoke briefly. Nothing important, Mama.” “Well, he would be the catch of the season. His father died recently, and he inherited the earldom. I know for a fact his mother has been after him to wed the past few years. She’ll be more insistent now.” “Really, Mama. You can’t believe a man such as he would be attracted to me. I’m not even pretty. He can choose from the most beautiful women in the Ton.” Her mother shook her head and frowned. “You do yourself an injustice. With prettier clothes, a new coiffure, and removing those awful glasses, you’d see a new person in the mirror.” Tabitha stiffened. “I’ve refused to parade around like a stupid debutante with nothing but love and marriage on my mind all these

15

years. Nothing has changed. Accept it, Mama. I’m on the shelf. Perhaps I like it here.” Her mother eyed her appraisingly. “I live in hope that someone will change your opinion on love and marriage one of these days. Your father and I have a happy marriage, and your sister, Mary, is happy in hers. Where did you get the idea that being a wife was so awful?” “I don’t know, Mama,” she lied to her mother. “Your father not only offered, but encouraged you to read all of those books in his library. I maintain it was a mistake. You’ve filled your head with too much useless information.” This was not an argument she wanted to have again with her mother. They’d argued about this topic many times. Her father always sided with Tabitha, but lately a worried expression had replaced the conciliatory one she had come to expect. She feared any day he might close his extensive library to her perusal. “Oh, look.” Tabitha pointed to the door. “The gentlemen have returned.” The ploy to distract Mama from further discussion of her marital status worked. Her mother hurried across the room to join her guests. Tabitha slipped out the French windows to walk around to the side door, and retreat to her room. A slight headache throbbed behind her eyes. “Miss Bartley.” She almost groaned out loud. She had nearly gotten away unseen. Lord Sterling took long strides down the walkway toward her. “Surely you’re not walking alone.” “Yes, I am,” she said and continued on her way around the house. “I will be glad to escort you. A lovely lady should not wander around the grounds at night—not alone, anyway.” Irritated, Tabitha swung around and faced him. “First, I am not a lovely lady. Second, I like solitude. It is highly underrated.” Taking her arm, he placed her hand on his sleeve and began to walk with her. “I agree. At times, I quite enjoy being alone. A person

cannot know who he is, unless he spends time getting to know himself.” Tabitha glanced sharply at his sculpted profile. Was he mocking her? His serious expression almost won her over until she remembered the wager. Obviously, Lord Sterling would do anything, or say anything, to win. Her throat tightened. Part of her wished he was the man he pretended to be. With relief, she saw they were at the side door. She pulled her arm loose. “Excuse me, Lord Sterling. This is my destination.” She nodded at the side entrance. “Good night.” Before he could respond, she yanked the door open and stepped inside. Tabitha took a last glance over her shoulder. Moonlight shone on his black hair and across the angles of his strong face. His wide shoulders and tall, lean body made her heart race. Fool, she warned herself and silently closed the door, shutting out his image.

Chapter Two Tabitha had decided on a plan to thwart the wager by the time she was dressed to go downstairs the next morning. Annoyed that a respectable earl would participate in such a game, she decided to challenge him. She’d show him not to be so arrogant as to expect every woman to fall at his feet. Having read several books her mother and father would not approve of, Tabitha possessed quite a bit of knowledge on the subject of seduction. Of course, she had no experience, but decided to have a bit of fun. Lord Sterling would be her experiment. She would seduce him. This was likely her one and only chance to experience what she’d read, since she didn’t plan on marrying. Her audacious thoughts made her cheeks flush and her heart trip faster. First, she’d let Mama think she’d had a change of heart. On Monday, they would travel back to London for the last few weeks of the season. Once there, she’d ask for new gowns and bonnets. She’d also stop wearing her eye glasses except to read. But, why wait? She’d put part of her plan into action today. She surprised Hilda when she suggested wearing her green gown this morning. Her mother had the dress made for her last season. Tabitha had never worn it. The low-cut bodice, small sleeves, and light, flowery material did not appeal to the studious Tabitha but suited her new seductive personality just fine. Hilda, pleased with Tabitha’s notion, immediately took the gown out of the wardrobe. After Tabitha had dressed, Hilda arranged her hair in a loose twist, leaving small curls to flutter around her face. Tabitha removed her spectacles and stared at herself. Her hazel

18

eyes reflected the color of her gown, and her skin appeared softer, more of a creamy color against the green dress. Still, she reached for her eye glasses. Her hand hovered above them. She felt unprotected, naked, as though something important was missing. If she planned to do this, she had to be strong and adventurous. They were only spectacles. She didn’t need them, except to read. Looking back into the mirror, she practiced her smile, one she’d seen her sisters use on admirers. Yes, this would be fun. Her first opportunity to try out her performance came as she walked down the curving staircase. Lord Sterling and several of his friends had stopped at the foot of the stairs to talk. They all raised their heads and glanced up as she descended. She smiled slightly and almost laughed out loud at their expressions. They looked closer, as though they didn’t recognize her. She waited until she was at the last step and stumbled. Lord Sterling was the closest. He quickly stepped forward to catch her. She leaned her body against him, briefly. “Thank you,” she said in a breathy voice. “I don’t know what happened.” She blinked her eyelashes at him. Lord Sterling helped her regain her balance and stepped back. He bowed. “I’m glad I was here to prevent your falling, Miss Bartley.” “I am, too.” She smiled at him and the rest of the group before heading toward the small dining room. Turning back for a second, she added, “I moved too hurriedly down the stairs. I’m a little late for breakfast." After that comment, she left them. A flash of pleasure at their stunned expressions almost sent her into a peal of laughter, but not yet. They continued to gaze at her until she turned the corner. **** “Am I dreaming?” Trout asked. “That was Miss Tabitha Bartley, right?” “It certainly was. Never thought to see her make us all

speechless,” another friend commented. “And,” he looked over at Sterling, “she smiled at all of us. She didn’t show you any partiality. You’ve lost your touch and the wager.” “Not yet,” Sterling drawled. “Why do you think she’s changed?” “To get your interest?” Trout asked. “Possibly. The wager isn’t over until we leave.” Sterling glanced down the corridor where she’d disappeared. His interest was piqued. When he’d seen her coming down the stairs, a flicker of desire had stirred. When she fell into his arms, his blood had gone hot and his cock had roused. Luscious, creamy skin was offset by the dark green dress that flowed around her. Her small breasts were shown to perfection in the tight, low cut gown. Burnished brown hair sparkled with flashes of red and gold color, when sunlight, coming through the windows, streaked across the strands. But the biggest surprise was those sexy, greenish-brown eyes no longer hidden by ugly spectacles. She’d fluttered her dark eyelashes like a coquette. He smiled. She’d thrown the gauntlet down. Who was he to refuse the dare? “What are we going to do today?” one of the men asked. “I’m off to go for a ride. Anyone want to join me?” Sterling said. Trout shook his head. “Not me. Several of us are going to the billiards room. Anyone that wants to can come along.” “I’ll see you back here later,” Sterling said, relieved no one had accepted his invitation. Miss Bartley wasn’t the only one that needed time alone. Sterling nodded good-bye to his friends and headed for the stables. Lord Bartley had offered horses to the male guests for their use. Sterling decided to take his offer rather than ride his own horse in an unfamiliar area. Inside the cool, shady barn, a groomsman greeted him. After hearing his request, he went toward a stall about half way down the building. He returned with a brown stallion. “His name is Hornet, my lord.”

20

Paige Cameron

“Thank you,” Sterling said. He mounted and directed Hornet to follow a well marked path. A clear blue sky overhead and bright sunlight made it the perfect day for riding. The stallion was responsive to the least touch. Sterling allowed Hornet to lead the way while his thoughts wandered. The celebration weekend was coming to a close, and they’d all be heading back to town for the last few weeks of the season. Afterwards, he’d return to his estate. The house had seemed empty the last time he was there. With Father gone, he and his mother would rattle around in the empty space. Perhaps he would invite some friends to spend a few weeks with him. Restlessness crawled over him. Nothing seemed to suit him lately. The time had come for him to focus on his estates and all his responsibilities. His mother was most concerned about him marrying and producing an heir. He wasn’t sure he wanted to commit himself to one woman just yet. Nevertheless, if he didn’t appear to look for an appropriate wife, his mother would soon become more vigorous in her determination to see him wed. Was he ready for a family? For the first time in his life, he felt unsettled. The death of his father touched him deeply and the burden of responsibility was heavy. His father had been a good earl. He took care of his people, his estates, and his family. Sterling hoped to do as well. He glanced around. He’d come quite a distance without realizing it. Pulling on the reins, he turned Hornet in the direction of the stables. Sterling pushed away his concerns regarding his obligations. He’d much rather think about Tabitha. She’d certainly taken them all by surprise this morning. She represented a mystery and a challenge. She’d sparked his interest last night when she expressed an awareness of his work regarding astronomy. Today, she’d aroused another more basic passion. He’d been surprised at the physical effect she’d had on him, when she walked down the stairs. Certainly, Tabitha wasn’t the most beautiful lady here this week-

end, yet he’d not given any particular notice to the others. When he caught her on the stairs to prevent her falling, her soft curves had leaned into him. An almost overpowering instinct had him wanting to carry her off. Away to some private spot, where he’d kiss those delectable lips and caress her soft skin. He found he was quite looking forward to the wager he’d reluctantly agreed on. **** Tabitha watched for Lord Sterling’s return from her seat by the library window. With an open book on her lap, she’d taken quick surreptitious glances while she pretended to read. Outside her window, the first Spring flowers peeked their heads up to the sun as a butterfly flitted around the blooms. She briefly noticed the lovely scene. Her plan to waylay the handsome earl had her attention. A familiar horse came into view. He rode well, straight and tall in the saddle toward the stables. Now, for her next move. Standing, she brushed the wrinkles from her skirt and walked toward the front door. Before going outside, she opened the parasol she’d left leaning against the wall in the foyer. She knew just the place to intercept him on his way back to the house. Cautiously, she pretended a casual walk along the path. She soon spotted him striding in her direction. He slowed when he saw her. “It’s a lovely morning, Miss Bartley,” he said. “I couldn’t resist getting outside on such a sunny day. Have you been riding?” “Yes. Your father was most gracious about offering his horses for our use.” She peeked around her parasol and smiled like she’d seen her sisters do so many times. “Too bad you’ve already had your exercise or I’d invite you to accompany me on my walk.” He opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted. She couldn’t

22

have planned it better herself. She fought to conceal her glee. “Miss Bartley, Sterling,” Trout called out as he hurried to join them. “I see you’ve finished your ride,” he said to Sterling. “Are you going for a walk, Miss Bartley?” “Yes, I am. I was just telling Lord Sterling that if he hadn’t already had his outing, I’d have invited him to join me. Perhaps you would escort me, Lord Trout?” “Really, that’s not necessary. I’d be pleased to walk with you,” Sterling said quickly. “I’m sure you were headed inside to change,” Trout said. “Don’t worry. I’ll be very happy to escort Miss Bartley.” He grinned at Sterling. “I need the exercise.” Sterling sent him a quick glare before bowing to Tabitha. “Perhaps another time.” He strode off taking long steps, frustration evident in his stride. Trout smiled at Tabitha and put out his arm. “Shall we?” “Definitely. It is so pleasing to have two such charming gentlemen ready to assist me.” She let her eyelashes flutter at him. Really, this was so much fun and so easy, if she didn’t nauseate herself with her syrupy praise. Men were astonishingly easy to manage. Feeling very confident, she took the offered arm and walked down a lane leading to the lake. “If you don’t mind my saying so,” Trout broke the silence, “you seem quite different today. For one, you have left your glasses off.” Tabitha flipped her parasol back to give him a bright smile. “I really only need them for reading.” A confused look came over his face, and he slowed their pace. “Then why have you always worn them?” “Well,” she stopped and leaned her head closer, “I’m rather shy. I felt more myself with them on. But, no one ever noticed me.” She said the last in a small, breathless tone. Pink flushed across his cheeks. “We were all blind. I am so glad you’ve decided to let us see your beautiful eyes.”

23

She moved her hand from his arm and placed it across her chest. “That is so very sweet of you to say. Thank you.” Dear God, was he going to melt at her feet? Trout’s face softened, and he started to take her hand. Feeling it was time to change the mood, she swooped her parasol forward and moved quickly down the lane. “Isn’t this the most beautiful morning?” She smiled back at him as he hurried to catch up. Obviously, she’d surprised him. Arriving at the lake’s shore, they stood and gazed across the water. The breeze had stopped. Reflections of the surrounding area, shown across the surface. Tabitha glanced along the shore line and spotted several smooth rocks at the water’s edge. She took one and handed the other to Trout. “I bet I can skim this rock across the surface farther than you.” “Never,” Trout said. They laughed and challenged each other as they skipped various flat rocks across the lake. Later, heading back to the house, she and Trout argued playfully about who had won. As they got to the front door, Trout stopped her. “I do hope you will save a dance for me tonight.” “Certainly, Lord Trout. It would be my pleasure.” Trout waved and headed to his room. Tabitha went to the small sitting room and found her mother, several of their guests, and the bride-to-be all having tea. “May I join you?” Tabitha asked. Her mother glanced up and stared. None of the family had seen her earlier, and her mother and sister’s surprise was evident in their stunned expressions. “Tabitha?” her mother asked. “Of course, Mama.” She casually strolled in and sat between Edna, her younger sister, and her mother. Leaning close to her mother, she whispered, “I decided you have been right all along. I need to dress more appropriately for my station in life.” She smiled at

her mother and the guests “You’ve quite surprised me.” Her mother poured a cup of tea and handed it to her. “Where have you been this morning?” “I went for a walk. Lord Trout joined me. We’ve just come back from the lake.” “How nice.” Lady Bartley said nothing else. She turned to the others, and they resumed talking. Tabitha gave her sister a smile and Edna leaned close. “Tabby,” she said, using Tabitha’s family nickname, “you really shocked Mama. You look lovely.” “Thanks. It takes a bit getting used to. I’m more comfortable in my old gowns.” “I’m sure the gentlemen will appreciate this gown more,” Edna teased. More than you know. Her strategy was unfolding as she’d hoped. She must be careful though and not get Lord Trout too interested. Her target was the arrogant Lord Sterling and helping him lose his inappropriate wager. Then, she’d soothe his ego by seducing him. When she considered that part of her plan, cold shivers ran down her spine. Still, a tiny spark of excitement made her heart beat faster, which encouraged her to continue with her decision. As soon as the others started to leave, Tabitha asked Edna if she might accompany her to her room. “I’d like a special gown for the dance tonight. Nothing I have really meets my needs. Since we’re about the same size, except for height, I thought you might loan me a gown. One of the maids can hem it for me.” “If you have nothing to wear, it’s your own fault,” her mother said. “I tried to have a gown made for you, but you didn’t cooperate.” “I’m sorry, Mama. You are right.” “What is this all about? This change is rather sudden. Not that I haven’t wanted to see you show your best side.” Trying to look innocent, Tabitha hugged her mother. “Your words finally got through to me. The disappointment on your face when you

looked at me also made me realize I was wrong to continue to oppose you.” She kissed her mother’s cheek and followed her sister out of the room. “Mama is speechless,” Edna said. “I don’t think she’s ever been speechless, but when she recovers she’ll know you were buttering her up to conceal the real reason for your transformation. You can tell me the truth,” Edna said as she opened the door to her bedroom. Tabitha didn’t want anyone to find out about her ploy to seduce Lord Sterling. Her sister would no doubt swoon, and when she recovered, go directly to Mama. Still Edna waited with an expectant expression on her face. “I’ve met several gentlemen who have caught my attention.” “Really?” Her sister sat on the side of her bed. “Now I’m flabbergasted. Who?” “The two I’m focusing on are Lord Trout and Lord Sterling.” “Mama will be pleased. Both are earls and have several estates, but it probably wouldn’t matter if they were only gentry. She thought you’d never show an interest in any man. Whichever one you decide on, Papa will definitely approve.” “Please don’t tell Mama or Papa yet. I need to get used to the feelings myself first, and neither of these gentlemen may be interested in me at all.” “One of them will, especially if you put forth some effort. You’ve always hidden your real self from everyone but family and close friends. I’m excited that you’ve decided to try and land a husband. Let’s find the perfect dress for tonight, and they won’t be able to resist you.” After trying on several gowns, Edna finally pulled one from the back of her wardrobe. “This one I never wore. The color wasn’t right for me. Try it on.” Tabitha slid the light, cream-colored gown over her head. Her sister fastened the back and faced her toward the mirror. Sunlight from the windows made the silver sequins sparkle. The small puffed

sleeves barely caressed her arms and the deep neckline showcased the top of her breasts. “There’s a silver bag and shoes to go with the outfit and a silver chain in your hair will complete the ensemble.” “But,” Tabitha put her hands over her breasts, “this bodice is very revealing. I’m not sure I can wear this.” “It’s not any more revealing than what all the other ladies wear. You only think so because you’ve worn nothing but high necked conservative gowns all your life. You look beautiful.” The cream color did suit her. Reaching up, she pulled the pins out of her hair and the long tresses fell to her waist. “Should I cut my hair?” she asked and lifted up a long curl. “No. It’s wonderful. I’ll send my hairdresser to your room tonight. She will arrange your hair in a new style.” Tabitha studied herself in the mirror and shook her head. Whatever have I started, she wondered. For once, she may have let her stubbornness lead her into trouble. A path where there was no way out, but marriage. Not to mention the fact that once her parents got used to the changes she’d made, especially her mother, they’d never let her go back to the way she was before. Hopefully, seducing Lord Sterling would be worth all she’d done and planned to do. Would a gentleman of the realm get angry when he found out a lady had only been playing with his affections, or would he just leave and go on his way? He might tell her parents. The biggest question of all, what did she do afterwards? Her daring behavior both created a sense of fun and excitement, and a little nibble of fear.

Chapter Three When her sister’s maid finished styling Tabitha’s hair, Tabitha stood at her mirror staring at a stranger. Had she started something she didn’t have the heart to continue? Who was this strange woman, and did she want to join the others downstairs as this new person? With much encouragement from Hilda and the other maid, Tabitha left the security of her bedroom and slowly began to descend the curved staircase. She heard the small, local band tuning their instruments, but didn’t feel quite ready to enter the crowded drawing room. Turning quickly, she fled down the corridor toward her father’s library. She needed time alone to think. Pushing open the door, she entered the quiet room. A fire crackled in the fireplace, the familiar scent of tobacco filled the air, and a man sat close-by. The back of the chair faced her. Papa hid here from the crowd, the same as her. She hurried across the room, leaned around the chair, and in one motion, put her arms around him, and kissed his cheek. “What a pleasant greeting, Miss Bartley. I never realized how exciting a library could be.” Lord Sterling smiled at her, then taking her hand, he quickly pulled her around the chair and into his lap. His hand took hold of her chin, and his sensuous mouth swooped in taking her by surprise. Her protest died the instant their mouths touched. Her lips parted in surprise. His tongue moved into her mouth, sending all rational thought from her head. Her arms slid around his neck as of their own accord, and she kissed him back. He tasted of good brandy and cinnamon, and smelled like spice.

His warm body surrounded her sending shivers of excitement coursing through her veins. When she moved closer, he groaned. Suddenly, as quickly as it started, she found herself being gently pushed away and placed on her feet. He stood putting an arm’s length of distance between them. “Forgive me. I don’t have any explanation for my reprehensible behavior,” he said, his expression serious. Tabitha moved closer and tilted her head up. “There’s nothing to forgive. Trust me. I would have stopped you if I wanted to. But...” She turned slightly away and glanced around the room. “To be truthful, I wanted you to kiss me. I liked it.” She swirled in a circle, and her gown flared around her. Raising her eyes to his, she moistened her lips with the tip of her tongue. “Papa doesn’t know, but I’ve read several of his books regarding seduction.” She let the words come out in a purr and stepped close again. “I’ve been waiting to meet someone I’d like well enough to try out a few of the suggestions on. Yesterday, I decided you were the right man.” She moved almost against him and let her hand drop to his chest directly over his heart. It pounded through his shirt. His eyes darkened. Stepping up on her tiptoes, her mouth brushed his. “So, you see, my lord,” she said, her soft breath caressing his lips. “If the truth were known, I have won your wager and have begun to seduce you.” She let her body lay briefly, fully against his, then turned abruptly away and quickly walked to the door. “See you at the dance.” She almost laughed, at the shock evident on his face, before she shut the door. Afraid he might follow and demand more detailed explanations, she rushed into the large drawing room that had been turned into a beautiful ballroom filled with fragrant blossoms and flickering candles. Lord Trout strode across the room the moment she stepped inside. “I’d begun to worry that you’d decided not to join us.” “And miss all the fun?”

“You are looking particularly beautiful tonight. May I have this dance? “Yes. Although I believe your praises are a bit above the top. Beautiful? No. I’m much too boring and blue-blooded to interest a real man.” She repeated his earlier words. His face went white. “You overheard us?” “I did.” She smiled. “You gave me quite an education on the interests of gentlemen and their propensity to be easily bored.” She glanced around him. “We must hurry if we are to join the set for dancing.” He rushed to follow her. “I must apologize most profusely, Miss Bartley.” She shook her head. “It’s not necessary. Please join me, and let us enjoy the evening.” Mindlessly, she followed the steps to the dance. Why had she told them so soon? Well, they were leaving tomorrow, and she had so enjoyed seeing their reaction. Plus, although she hated to admit it, Lord Sterling’s kiss had shaken her to her very core. She’d told him about the wager while still flustered by their surprising encounter, so it didn’t matter if Lord Trout knew too. At least now she could return to her real life and quit pretending to be someone else. The dance steps brought them back together, and Lord Trout tried again to explain or excuse their actions. Tabitha smiled, shook her head, and refused to discuss the issue further. It was the most effective response. After returning her to the side where she’d been standing, he thanked her for the dance and disappeared into the crowd. Poor Lord Trout. He might never get over the shock. She finally let out the laugh she’d been holding inside. It was that or cry. Surprisingly, a deep sadness swept over her. Until this moment, she’d refused to admit the depth of hurt she’d felt at their words. She raised her chin. But, she’d beaten them all at their own game. ****

Sterling was stunned by her revelation. He watched as she disappeared out the door. What the hell just happened? First, he hadn’t planned to kiss her. An overwhelming desire to crush her to him and ravish that sweet mouth knocked all common sense out of his head. She’d tasted as amazing as he expected, like sweet marzipan. He’d wanted to nibble on her lips and the rest of her seductive body. Her lavender scent had his head spinning. He’d fought the rising urge to do more than just kiss her. Thank goodness he’d come to his senses before he’d taken an irrevocable step totally beyond the bounds of propriety. Sterling ran his hands through his hair. Her words surprised him. She knew about the wager, so that must be what brought on the change in her appearance and actions. He chuckled to himself. A woman not afraid to take on a man and beat him at his own game was very enticing. Like a rough diamond before it was polished, she’d hidden her fire and beauty. She might think she’d ended the wager, but he vowed to himself he’d have her melting into his arms before she realized what happened. The next few weeks promised to be interesting and rewarding. With a determined step, he headed to the dance. At the door, he surveyed the room and spotted her standing beside her mother and sisters. The band prepared to start another round. The first few notes of the music indicated a waltz. Good. Striding across the room, he stepped in front of several other would-be partners and claimed her for himself. “I believe this is our dance, Miss Bartley.” Her eyes sparkled, and those full, sexy lips curved into a smile. “Did I promise this one to you, my lord? I’d forgotten.” He raised an eyebrow, and she laughed out loud. She put her hand on his outstretched arm as he guided her onto the floor. She followed his steps gracefully for someone he suspected had

avoided dancing as much as possible in the past. His arm wrapped around her slim waist. Her warmth and sweet fragrance tantalized him. Leaning down, he whispered, “You may have won the first skirmish, my love, but I’ll win the final encounter. You want me to satisfy your curiosity, and I will. Nonetheless, I plan to entice you to beg me before I do.” She raised her head and looked directly into his eyes. “Is this another challenge, my lord? I do so love to fight the opposition, as my mother would tell you. Aren’t you afraid you’ll lose again? I’ve never begged anyone for anything in all my life.” “There’s always a first time. I don’t scare easily, and I plan to win. You have only read about seduction. I have experience.” He whirled her easily around an older couple about to collide with them. “When you are painfully, obviously smitten with me, I will be the winner,” Tabitha said. “But, first we must decide what the prize will be, and who will declare the winner.” “I already know what I want, and I suggest Lord Trout might be pleased to be our judge, but only if we can’t agree between ourselves about the winner. He certainly would enjoy seeing me humbled and defeated.” “Yes, he’s an excellent choice. Tell me what you want. It will help me decide on my prize,” Tabitha said, a teasing note in her voice. “Ladies first.” “You never asked how I knew about your particular interest, when we met.” “No, I didn’t. I meant too, but other things made me forget our earlier conversation.” “I read an article you wrote on the pleasures of studying astronomy. You mentioned you have an observatory at your estate.” “Are you interested in studying the stars?” he asked. “Very much so. I want to be in your observatory on the night the Talbot comet soars across the heavens, three weeks from now. It’s a once in a lifetime chance for me to view something spectacular.”

32

“Your request goes right along with what I desire.” Lust flickered through him at the thought of Miss Tabitha Bartley pressed against him as she peered out at the night sky in his very private observatory. He’d never taken a woman there. In fact, few of his friends had visited his private sanctuary. “And what do you wish to have for your prize?” Tabitha asked. “I want free access to you for a long weekend.” Her face flushed a rosy red and anger flashed for a second in those telling eyes. “You want my company for a full weekend?” The music came to an end as she stated her question. He glanced around, relieved to see no one appeared to have overheard her. Putting his hand on the small of her back, he guided her toward where her mother stood. Leaning down, he said softly, “Your company and your body.” She gave him a sharp glance, her face even redder. “Does that frighten you? If you’re afraid you can’t resist me, we can call off the wager.” He watched her swallow, and the rapid, short breaths she took moved her small, but luscious breasts upward straining against her snug bodice and tempting him to cup them in his hands. Not here, not now, but soon. His cock hardened at the thought. They were almost to her mother when he heard her soft reply. “How will the winner be decided?” she asked. “If I find myself so enthralled with you that I’m unable to resist your charms, I will announce it by asking you to dance, three times at the same ball.” “That’s almost as serious as making an offer.” “Not quite,” he said. But, damned close. “And if I do so, by the night before the comet flashes through our sky, I lose. But, whenever I start to make love to you, a single whispered, ‘Please don’t stop,’ and I win.” “Lord Sterling, I’ve never backed down from a challenge. I’ll enjoy my prize very much.” Tabitha flashed him a defiant look.

They’d arrived at her mother’s side. “So be it,” he said and left her standing beside her family, a bemused expression on her face. He hoped he hadn’t overestimated his ability to seduce a book-smart, engaging young woman. He crossed the room to join his friends, but his thoughts were on all the delectable things he planned to do to Tabitha in order to win the wager. **** What had she done? Was she out of her mind? Tabitha flipped open her fan and waved it across her heated face. He gave her an opportunity to step back and call the foolish wager off. Did she? No! This was all his fault. The musky male scent of him had come into her lungs with every breath she took, and his warm hand at her back had sent heat sparking through in her body. She wanted to blame the rapid beat of her heart and her breathlessness on the waltz, but it wasn’t the dance. His aura surrounded her and enticed her to go along with his preposterous suggestion. Her desire pushed aside her rational reasoning, even though she knew the temptation might lead to her downfall. And, her stubbornness prevented her from begging for anything, especially a seduction. Although her curiosity had been aroused about the intimate behavior between a man and woman, more so since meeting Lord Sterling. He couldn’t hold her to the bet. A gentleman would never really expect her to follow through if he won. Would he? Excitement and a touch of fear at the idea of a clandestine weekend all alone with Lord Sterling made her shiver. If she weren’t so anxious to see the Talbot comet, she might throw the contest so he’d win his prize. Perhaps, she’d give him his wish as a conciliatory offering. She trembled again at her salacious thoughts. “Are you cold?” her mother asked. She reached out and touched

34

Tabitha’s cheek. “You look quite flushed. I do hope you aren’t about to be ill. Perhaps we’ll delay our return to London or not go at all. There are only a few more weeks of the season, and since you’ve shown no interest in finding a husband, we might do best to stay home.” There was her way out. All she had to do was agree she’d prefer to not return to town. Their wager and her temptation would simply go away. The choice taunted her. She glanced around the room and spotted Lord Sterling talking with Lord Trout. They glanced at her. Too late. She’d appear a coward to withdraw at this stage, and she didn’t really want to. Taking a deep breath, she spoke and knew with her words she was throwing herself off a high cliff. “I am interested in going back to London, Mama. I’m fine. There’s nothing wrong with me.” Except for my new wagering addiction with a certain titled gentleman. Her mother gave her a hard stare, then shrugged. “Since this is the first time you’ve expressed an actual interest in being part of the season, I’m certainly not going to discourage you. We’ll go, as long as you’re feeling well by Monday.” At the end of the season, would she land safely, Tabitha wondered, or be irrevocably ruined? No matter what, she found herself unable to resist. If she won, she got to view the heavens from an observatory. Astronomy had been an obsession since she read her first book on the subject. She’d often sat at her bedroom window and studied the stars. But, to see them up close through a large telescope. How magnificent. All she had to do was win. Later, in bed, Tabitha thought over the events of the evening and recalled other books she’d read on seduction and intercourse. When she remembered the descriptions of how a man touched a woman and saw the diagrams, her body had reacted strangely. Warmth had crept from her cheeks to her abdomen and lower to her private parts. Her heart had pounded in her chest as though she’d been running. She’d

glanced up and checked several times to be sure no one was around. If she lost the wager, she’d agreed for her and Lord Sterling to spend time at his estate. She’d realized from his words and the wicked glint in his eyes that he planned for them to be alone, at least part of the time. If he won. Feeling hot, she threw off her cover. In her vivid imagination, she visualized him touching her, like in the book. His hard, warm hands caressing her throat, smoothing over her chest to her breasts. Her nipples tightened and ached even now at the thought. Her hands brushed lightly over her breasts and down over her abdomen to her most private area. Very lightly, she moved her fingers across the soft hair and along the tender mound. A soft ache made her long for more. Embarrassed, she turned onto her stomach trying to force the thoughts from her mind. What was wrong with her? Maybe her mother had been right in not wanting to allow Tabitha complete access to Papa’s library. Papa, for once, had overruled Mama. Of course, her parents would never suspect that a proper, well bred young lady might even open such books, let alone read them. The next few weeks might very well decide her future. Tabitha had to admit, she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to win or lose the wager.

Chapter Four “Are you addled?” Trout paced around the empty dining room. “Please sit and have coffee. I’m getting tired watching you walk circles around the room,” Sterling said. “This is all a hum? You can’t be serious about making another wager with Miss Bartley. “I told you she and I negotiated another challenge last night, at the dance.” “For good and all, end this now. I’ve never heard of such a harebrained idea. You can’t plan on ruining a lady.” Trout sat across from him, a worried expression on his face. “I haven’t said what the wager is or my reward for winning.” “You don’t have to. We’ve been friends since we were six. I know you and see that gleam of desire in your eyes when you look at her.” “Maybe I plan to marry her.” Trout snorted. “Right.” “You are boring me with these dramatics.” “I can’t discourage you?” “No.” Trout shook his head. “I don’t understand what’s come over you, but I’m going to try and make sure the lady wins.” Sterling chuckled. “We’ll see.” He pushed away from the table leaving a half cup of coffee and part of his meal. “Where are you going? You haven’t finished.” “I’m going to find Miss Bartley and go for a walk with her before I leave today. I’ll see you in London.” He stopped before going out the door and turned around to face Trout. “Don’t try to convince her

to end the wager. I gave her a chance. She was determined to continue.” “Then you shouldn’t be worried about my attempting to change her mind,” Trout said. Sterling smiled then strode off down the passageway. He expected to find her in her favorite room, the library. Sure enough, she sat curled up in a chair by the double windows. A book sat open on her lap as she stared outside. “It’s a lovely day,” Sterling said. Her head whirled around in his direction. He smiled. “Won’t you join me for a walk? I’ll be leaving after lunch.” He enjoyed watching the emotions chase across her face. She’d be a poor poker player. He saw the indecision, then reluctant acquiescence. “I’ll come with you. My book is not holding my interest this morning. Perhaps some fresh air will help clear my mind.” “I do hope the events of last night are not upsetting you,” he said as he took her arm and walked outside with her. “Of course not. I’m looking forward to viewing the night sky from your observatory. I haven’t decided how I might get to your estate at the right time to see the Talbot comet pass by earth.” “If you win, which I doubt, the arrangements will be made for you to visit on the date of the comet’s appearance.” She stole a look at him as they meandered along a pathway from the house. “You seem very confident. I saw you talking with Lord Trout last night.” “You need not worry. My friend is your valiant knight. He is determined you will win any wager we made.” “Then there is no question of my success,” she said and smiled up at him. “Perhaps I should seduce Lord Trout. It appears he might make a lady a very good husband. I’ve been thinking lately of marrying, as much as I abhor the idea. My mother insists it is the only choice for a proper young lady.”

38

“Then you must stop this wager. I have no intention of marrying yet and your husband will expect a virgin.” Sterling spoke bluntly and waited to see her reaction. As he expected her cheeks flushed a rosy red. He wasn’t sure if he was lying. Could he see her married to his friend, when just touching her hand sent sparks of desire along his nerves endings and directly to his cock? How had this wild idea of seducing her started? He needed to have his head examined. His mind must be addled as Trout said. They’d turned a curve in the path and stopped under a canopy of trees. The rustle of leaves and a few birds chirping broke the silence. She took a deep breath and stepped close to him. “Do you want me to call off the wager? Has Lord Trout convinced you that it is best?” “It’s best for you,” Sterling said. He found himself holding his breath. He wasn’t sure if he wanted her to back out or continue. “You’ve had time to realize if I told my parents afterwards you’d be forced to marry me,” she said. She licked her lips, and he had to hold himself rigid to keep from ravishing her mouth. “The decision is yours,” he said in a soft voice. The air around them stilled. Her hands brushed across his chest and soft arms wrapped around his neck as she went up on her tiptoes and leaned her body against his. Her sweet breath whispered across his lips. “I’m not afraid. You want me already. How can I lose?” “This way.” His voice roughened. He scowled, before jerking her tighter to him and devouring that soft, tasty mouth. He heard the catch in her breath and relished the feel of her curves held tight against his hardness. His lips moved down her throat to the rapid heartbeat pounding through the translucent skin. He nibbled at the spot where her neck and shoulder joined, then continued moving his mouth over her smooth skin to the low neckline of her gown. Roughly, he pushed the fabric aside and caught her rosy nipple between his teeth where he gently nibbled on it, then put his whole

mouth over the center of her breast and suckled. Her body responded, moving restlessly. She held his head tight against her. Realizing what he was doing, he fought for control and carefully set her back from him. “That is why I will win,” he said and reached out to straighten her gown over her breasts. Her body flushed from her face to her breast. She turned from him and walked a few steps away. “You know words you’ve read in a book. You have no idea what danger you’re playing with. Tell me to go to hell and end this nonsense,” he said, forcing his words to sound harsh and demanding. Without answering, she left him and walked back toward the house. He stayed and watched until she was out of sight. Raking his hand through his hair, he let out a groan. He wasn’t sure who was the bigger fool, him, or Tabitha. They both had much to lose if they continued on this course. And yet, he waited for her decision. For himself, he found he didn’t want to turn away. Somehow, she’d beguiled him. For the first time in his life, he considered not trying to win. It would be best if she won her prize and they could laugh over the stupid wager and go their separate ways. He hoped. **** His anger and frustration had come out in his words and tone. They poured over her. She fought the unexpected and unknown feelings he’d aroused in her—ones that had overwhelmed her by being both terrifying and alluring. Tabitha didn’t go directly to the house. She feared if her mother saw her, she’d begin asking questions that Tabitha dared not answer. Instead, she took the walkway that led to the lake, found a grassy spot, sat down carefully, and watched the swans gliding around the edge of the water. Such a peaceful existence. She envied the simple

40

Paige Cameron

life the swans had and she’d had before meeting Lord Sterling. Sterling. She liked the sound of his name. In fact, she liked everything about him, too much. How had a simple, funny challenge led her into such deep water? She chuckled at her word choice. Restless, she stood and strolled along the edge, occasionally sending a rock skipping across the smooth surface. He’d given her another out, and she hadn’t been able to answer. Her reasonable mind said, “Yes, let’s stop this now.” The new person she was becoming, who was totally unfamiliar to her, kept urging her on. She’d liked the feel of his mouth on hers. When he’d suckled her breast, her legs went weak, and moisture seeped at the junction of her thighs. Thank goodness he’d stopped when he did. She’d have to be on her toes and pretend not to enjoy his seduction, because she had almost said, ‘Please don’t stop,’ a few minutes ago, right after he’d pushed her away. Her mind was so engrossed in dealing with the new experiences that she’d have let him lead her right into trouble or at least what society said was not respectable. He’d certainly made it clear he had no intention to marry, or, at least, not yet. He was right. She’d be soiled goods and no respectable man would marry a young lady who had lost her virginity. Tabitha shrugged. She wasn’t so young anymore. Already the men of the Ton thought of her as on the shelf. Still, if the unexpected happened and she received a serious offer, she’d have to tell him. Her parents would find out, and be disappointed and feel disgraced. Disappointed would be a mild word for her mother’s reaction. Drat, why had the man brought all of this up and put the decision on her? Because his life doesn’t change very much if he wins or loses. Meanwhile, I could lose my reputation, as well as any chance for marriage and children. Not that I want marriage and children, she reminded herself. Still, I’d like to have a choice. The decision was simple when considered thoroughly. She’d tell him to forget the wager and stay home. Tomorrow, she’d become very sick.

No, she was not a coward. They’d go to London and she’d forget the wager, but continue to let this new side of her develop. Her mother was right, as usual. Marriage was the only choice. She didn’t want to be the pitiful, older woman laid aside and dependent on relatives. The woman no one chose. She’d make a list of the requirements for a husband and find him among the gentlemen of the Ton. Well, as close as she could get. She didn’t expect to find the complete man of her dreams. Having made her decision, she strolled back to the house. “Where have you been?” her mother asked. “You missed saying good-bye to Lord Sterling and Lord Trout. They’d both shown an interest in you this weekend.” “I’m sorry. I didn’t think they’d be leaving so soon. We’ll see them in London.” Her mother studied her. “What are you up to?” “Whatever do you mean, Mama? I am simply doing as you asked, showing an interest in some proper gentlemen. I’m quite looking forward to the rest of the season.” Mama shook her head. “You are not my child. Someone kidnapped my Tabby and left a stranger behind.” Wearing a puzzled expression, she walked away and left Tabitha standing in the foyer. **** After a week in London, the first of Tabitha’s new gowns arrived. She twisted and turned in front of the mirror to admire the blush colored, glace silk gown. The silk had a lustrous quality that added richness to her overall appearance. Her mother and she had finally agreed on a neckline somewhere between the kind where she had to worry about every deep breath she took and the chin tickling type Tabitha preferred. The dressmaker had trimmed the dress with a darker pink ribbon. The bodice ribbon was sewn so that the bow tied snug under her breasts, and the ribbon fell

down the middle of the long skirt. Her sleeves and the bottom of her gown were trimmed with a similar, though narrower, ribbon. The matching slippers and reticule completed her perfect outfit. “That color is lovely on you. I’ll have my maid work on your hair tonight before we leave for the Carrington ball,” her mother said. “And, I will loan you my pearls to wear in your hair. But, you haven’t commented on your gown. Do you like it?” Tabitha slid her hands along the soft fabric. “It is the most beautiful gown I’ve ever worn.” Her mother frowned at her. “Are you being sarcastic, Tabby? You were the one to indicate an interest in new gowns, and you wanted to return to London.” “The gown is truly lovely, Mama, but being in town has been so boring. I’ve had no time to visit the museums or my favorite book stores.” “There will be time for that after you’ve found a husband. In another year or two, at the most, you’ll be considered on the shelf, if not already. Don’t you want your own home?” “I have accepted I must marry to keep from having to live with my parents or one of my sisters all my life. I don’t particularly like the idea of being owned by a man.” “Your father was wrong to ever let you near his library. You had to have acquired your peculiar ideas of marriage from the books you read. Well, I’m glad you’ve come to your senses and decided to find a husband. Once married, I’m sure you’ll change your attitude.” Shaking her head, her mother left the room. Perhaps she’d feel different if her husband was Lord Sterling, but she had not seen or heard from him since they arrived in London last week. She had not responded to him about the wager the day they talked, but had walked off. He must have decided it was over. Obviously, his interest had only been in winning. Tabitha shrugged her shoulders. She’d find a man interested in hunting and sports who would leave her to do what she wanted.

Someone preferably with an estate that included a large library and who favored staying in the country most of the time rather than town. A man she could control. She smiled at her image in the mirror. That shouldn’t be too difficult. **** “I, for one, am glad you changed your mind about that crazy wager,” Trout said. His long, leggy frame sprawled across one of Sterling’s chairs in the drawing room of Sterling’s town house. Sterling stood by the fireplace sipping a brandy. “I appreciate you bringing me to my senses. It was a rather idiotic idea. I’m quite surprised the lady even entertained the idea of the wager, but she is very competitive and a little bit stubborn.” Which works in my favor. Satisfaction warmed him as he took another sip of his drink. “Not natural in a lady,” Trout said. He tipped his glass and swallowed a good portion of his brandy. “What are we doing tonight?” “I do not know your plans, but I’m committed to attend the Carrington ball.” Where I hope to see Tabitha. She’d not been far from his thoughts. Trout might believe he’d changed his mind about the wager. He hadn’t. He’d been biding his time. “A boring ball? Do we have to go? We could meet up with the others at a gaming hall, enjoy the games and women.” “My mother will be disappointed if I don’t put in an appearance. She’s already noticed I’ve not attended any of the fashionable dances since coming back to town.” “Better be careful, Sterling. She has decided you need to be married. That’s dangerous.” Sterling laughed. “Yes, she wants me wed and to quickly produce an heir. She’s right. I know my duty. I’ve just been avoiding it. With my father gone, I have no choice but to consider the current crop of debutantes.”

“My good fellow, that is a dreary thought.” “You’ll face it soon enough. After all, you’re thirty-one, the same as me. We can’t ignore our responsibilities much longer.” Trout grimaced. “Now you sound like my mother.” He noticeably shuddered. “Dash it all, now you’ve put me in a sour mood.” “Buck up old chap. We still have a few days of freedom left. Neither of us is married tonight. See you later this evening,” Sterling said as Trout stood and stretched then headed for the door. “Maybe,” Trout grumbled. “Perhaps Miss Bartley might be one to consider, if I have too. She did take finding out about the wager rather well, and I doubt she’d be the type to harp on a man.” He nodded as though to himself. “Yes, definitely, if I have to be leg-shackled, she’d be the first one to consider.” He waved and strode off down the corridor. “Not if I have anything to do with it,” Sterling mumbled. The thought of Tabitha married to his best friend caused his chest to tighten. He didn’t like that idea at all. He’d deliberately avoided running into her this past week. He knew from the gossip mill that her family had arrived in town, so he’d stayed away from balls and the area of town where the ladies shopped. What must she think about his abrupt departure from her home? Did he spark her curiosity? He hoped he had her as unsettled as he had been since that morning she came downstairs and took his breath away. He didn’t like not being in control. That wouldn’t happen again. He’d never admit it to Trout, but he looked forward to the Carrington ball. He looked forward to seeing her, again.

Chapter Five Tabitha found herself searching for Lord Sterling as she and her mother strolled around the crowded ballroom. She waved to several friends, but didn’t stop. Her mother seemed determined to find them a place at the edge of the dance floor. She glanced down at her gown and remembered how surprised she’d been at her appearance after Mama’s maid finished arranging her hair in soft twists with the creamy pearls intertwined. For the first time ever, she looked pretty, and that surprised her. She’d never expected changing her coiffure and leaving off her glasses would make such a difference. Still, she felt almost naked without the glasses. Her mother stopped. “This is a good place.” “For what, Mama?” “Why to show off my daughter, of course.” She smiled at Tabitha. “I’m very pleased with your transformation. I should have demanded you do something about your appearance right from the first year I brought you to London. This is much better, though, having you decide it was time. Hopefully, you didn’t wait too long.” Tabitha tried to ignore the nerves jumping in her stomach. Several past acquaintances, both women and men, had stared at her in shock. She shrugged her shoulders in irritation when she felt her face warm and knew she blushed. She’d hoped to present a calm, nonchalant attitude, to appear indifferent to the stares her changed appearance would cause. Flipping her fan open, she waved it across her face. The room had quickly become hot and stuffy. “Mama, I’m going to wander around and converse with some of

my friends.” “Don’t be too long, the orchestra is tuning up. The dancing will start shortly.” “I’m sure the gentlemen can find me, if they really want to ask me to dance. I’m uncomfortable standing here like a display of household wares for sale.” Before her mother could answer, Tabitha walked off into the crowd. In the middle of the stream of people, she had some anonymity. She studied the late comers and wondered if Lord Sterling would even attend. She hadn’t seen him and refused to acknowledge her slight disappointment. It didn’t matter. They had nothing to say to each other. Since she’d heard no further word regarding the wager, she assumed it was off. Thank goodness. She tried to conjure up a feeling of relief instead of disappointment. The music started, and she moved between several people to view the dance floor. Couples formed lines. Tabitha thought she saw Lord Sterling with one of the more popular debutantes of this season. She moved her head for a better look. Yes, it was him dressed in a dark blue coat and pantaloons with an embroidered silver vest. His tall frame hovered over the shorter men around him. She frowned at the petite woman smiling up at him. Her golden hair glistened in the candle light, and her light blue gown complimented her hair and porcelain skin. Tabitha would never be able to compete with her. She touched her own hair and noticed how many of the women chosen to dance were small blonds, not average height women with mousey brown hair. She didn’t care. Lord Sterling was not her choice for a husband anyway. “May I have this dance?” She almost jumped. Glancing around, she smiled at Lord Trout standing by her side. “You are looking particularly lovely this evening, Miss Bartley.”

Tabitha laughed. “And you are your usual charming self, mouthing compliments to all the ladies.” He shook his head no. “Only you. Shall we dance?” He put out his hand. She let him lead her onto the dance floor. They joined the group that included Lord Sterling and were just in time as the music started. Tabitha enjoyed dancing. She tried to ignore the man several couples down, as the dance led them into intricate steps, moving her along the line closer each time to him. Sterling bowed and stepped forward. “Good evening, Miss Bartley.” “Lord Sterling.” She gave him a brief smile. The dance parted them for a moment. “Are you enjoying your time in town?” he asked when they came together again. “Very much,” she said and stepped away, down the line. Several times during the dance they spoke, always briefly and in a most proper manner. Tabitha was relieved each time the dance separated them. Just the touch of his hand sent waves of heat up her arm and over her body. Yet he appeared cool and disinterested. After the dance ended, Lord Trout walked with her to where her mother stood chatting with friends. “Thank you,” she said. “I hope to see you later this evening,” he said, before bowing and walking off, then quickly disappeared in the crowd. Tabitha discovered she was the novelty of the night and danced every round, but Lord Sterling continued to ignore her. She tried to pretend it didn’t matter. Her various dance partners had been pleasant, commented on how lovely she looked, and genuinely seemed surprised at her ability to follow even the most awkward dancer of the bunch. Although, her toes did hurt. “Miss Bartley, may I escort you to the refreshments?” Lord Trout asked. She looked around and saw the crowd moving toward the dining

room. “How thoughtful, yes. Would you like some lemonade or anything?” Tabitha asked her mother. “No. I’m fine. Go and enjoy yourselves.” She beamed at Lord Trout. Tabitha placed her hand on Lord Trout’s arm, and they joined the others streaming into the smaller room. “If you’d like to sit here,” Lord Trout indicated an empty chair by the wall, “I’ll fight my way to the front and return with our refreshments.” “Are you sure I can’t help carry our plates back to our seats?” “No. I’ll return soon.” She leaned back in the chair and watched the various couples come in. Lord Sterling entered with the young blond lady he’d danced with earlier. He bent his head down to hear what she said. A flash of anger swept through Tabitha shocking her. Surely she wasn’t jealous. How ridiculous, she scolded herself. You hardly know the man. Just be thankful your indiscretions went no further than they did. She was glad when the couple disappeared in the crowd. Restless, she tapped her toe and waited impatiently to return to the other room. Brief relief washed over her when she saw Lord Trout returning with a plate of food and two glasses of lemonade. She reached up to take one glass. “Thank you. How gallant to fight through all those people for me.” He stepped back and drew several more chairs over by her. “Saw Sterling and Lady Jane Potter, they’re going to join us. Here.” He handed her the plate. “Help yourself. I ate some at the table. Those tiny sandwiches are tasty.” Her appetite fled when he mentioned Lord Sterling. If only she could leave. But, that would raise eyebrows and be rude. There was nothing for it, but to continue her pretense of disinterest. She ate one of the sandwiches and took a swallow of lemonade. The food was good, but the warm lemonade tasted too sweet. Lord Trout continued to stand, watching for his friend.

If I had magic powers, I could just disappear, Tabitha wished. She and Lord Trout saw the other couple at the same time. “There they are.” He waved, catching their attention. “Lady Jane and Sterling, join us. I found some spare chairs.” He turned to Tabitha. “Lady Jane, have you met Miss Bartley?” Lady Jane gave a brief smile and looked down her nose at Tabitha. “Once, I believe. I understood you did not care for balls and parties, Miss Bartley.” “People do change their minds. How have you been? Are you enjoying your first season in town?” She raised her chin and smiled at Lord Sterling. “I’ve enjoyed all of it, but especially tonight.” She fluttered her eyelashes at him. Tabitha wanted to push her off the chair she’d just sat on. Lord Sterling had a twinkle in his eye and took his time looking over at Tabitha. “How are you?” he asked, very politely. “Well, thank you.” Tabitha blinked her eyes at him and smiled devilishly. “We so enjoyed your visit to our country home, Lord Sterling. Wasn’t the party for my sister delightful?” “All the guests were most affable and the entertainment of the highest order. A most pleasing weekend, but it is always good to return to town.” He glanced pointedly at Lady Jane. “Lord Trout, I must return to my mother. Would you escort me back?” “Of course, Miss Bartley. Excuse us.” He nodded to the other couple and set the plate and glasses on a cluttered side table. “Shall we?” He put out his arm. Tabitha nodded briefly to Lord Sterling and Lady Jane, then relieved, walked out of the room. “You’re attracted to him, aren’t you?” “What?” Tabitha glanced at her escort. “My friend, Sterling. You are attracted to him, and he to you. Thank goodness you both came to your senses and cancelled that ridiculous wager.”

50

“No more ridiculous then the one you all made that started the wagering. So, the consequences are on you. But, you are wrong. I’m not attracted to him. He’s an arrogant, stubborn man who will do anything to win.” “Perhaps arrogant and stubborn, but I’ve never known him to be obsessed with winning. And if he is, so are you.” “I am not!” Trout only chuckled. “Your mother is looking our way and seems concerned that we are arguing.” “We’re not having an argument. This is a spirited discussion.” Now he laughed out loud. “I really believe I’d court you if I didn’t know your heart was already taken,” Trout said just before they arrived at her mother’s side. Tabitha stared at him speechless. He bowed. “Thank you for a most entertaining interlude.” She watched him head back toward the refreshment room. She was still stunned by his comment. Did everyone see through her disguise and realize her attraction to the very eligible earl? “Tabitha, this is the second time I’ve spoken. Have you lost your hearing?” She flushed. “Sorry, Mama. What did you say?” “Whatever were you and Lord Trout arguing about? People were staring.” “We had a spirited discussion on the outcome of the horse race next weekend.” Her mother viewed her suspiciously. “When did you become interested in racing?” “I’ve been reading some of father’s magazines and the paper. A woman must be able to have an intelligent conversation about men’s main interests, racing and gambling.” “Ladies do not discuss gambling. They talk of recent activities, current events, appropriate books, and other civil conversation.” “Such as the weather, Mama?”

“Don’t be saucy, young lady.” The musicians began to tune their instruments. Tabitha was thinking of suggesting they leave early when Lord Sterling came to her side. “May I have this dance, Miss Bartley?” She nodded yes and let him lead her out to the dance floor. When the music began, she realized it was a waltz. He put his hand and arm firmly around her and led her into the swaying steps. Taking a deep breath, she breathed in his scent of spicy cologne. His warm body wrapped around her causing her heartbeat to quicken. She felt safe, at home, in his arms. Why him? She wanted to stay cool and collected, but she remembered the last time he’d held and touched her. “You’re very quiet, Miss Bartley.” His deep voice resonated inside her. “You left early without saying good-bye.” Now why did she say that? He’ll think he upset her. “I believed we’d said all there was to say when you walked away from me.” “I needed time alone,” she whispered. He pulled her closer and that ache started again in her lower belly. She felt his hardness against her and pushed slightly away. “Does it scare you, what you do to me? It scares me.” She looked into his eyes. They were dark green, like the lake on a cloudy day. “Why?” “Because if I followed my instincts and made love to you, our parents would have us married within weeks. You told me yourself you weren’t particularly fond of the marital state.” “No, I haven’t been.” He swung her around and around as the music ended. “How do we always end up conversing in such improper conversations? No other woman entices me, as you do, to behave in such a manner.” “Is that the attraction of Lady Jane, that she is more proper?” He leaned back before releasing her. “Are you jealous?”

52

Paige Cameron

“Of course not. We hardly know each other.” This lie was getting easier to say. “We know each other better than any other unwed couple in this room.” He leaned forward. “Meet me outside on the veranda. I’ll be waiting.” Tabitha had the grace to blush at his words. The man completely disarmed her. She struck out across the room to her mother’s side. She didn’t care if he followed or not. He did. He thanked her, bowed, and walked briskly away. “A handsome man. Is he the one you like the best?” her mother asked. “There is no one special yet,” she said and watched Lord Sterling slip outside. “I’m going to the retiring room to freshen up, Mama.” “We won’t stay much longer. Some have already left.” **** Tabitha moved quickly before she changed her mind. She hid in the crowd so Mama would not see her direction. Glancing around and making sure that no one noticed, she slipped out onto the wide empty veranda. Here an array of candlelight lit the stone floor and the attached walkway to the gardens. A sliver of moon reflected light, and a slight breeze ruffled the curls around her face. He stood further along and to the side in the shadows, alone and staring away from her. She moved quietly up behind him and wrapped her arms around his middle. He stiffened then stood still as she let her body lean against him. She laid her head against his back and absorbed his scent and the feel of him. Pulling her hands apart, he turned and faced her. He started to say something, but instead cupped her face, and leaning down, ran his tongue over the line of her closed lips. She opened for him, and he gathered her tightly into his arms while he ravished her mouth. Raising his head, he whispered, “Come.” Taking her hand, he led her

down the lighted path, turned left, then right until they were far from the others and surrounded by darkness. “You play with fire, my Tabby.” He lifted her into his arms and carried her across the uneven ground to the backside of a large, wide oak. He put her feet on the grass, then struggled out of his coat and swung it around her shoulders. Before she could say a word, he pushed her against the tree trunk. His mouth nibbled at her neck and along her shoulder, while his hands moved the top of her bodice lower exposing her white breasts gleaming in the silver moonlight. His lips moved from shoulder to breasts, kissing each pebbled nipple. Tabitha ran her hands through his thick hair and moaned softly. He licked and suckled each tip of her breasts as he moved his leg between hers. She rubbed herself against his thigh to relieve the ache building deep inside. “Damn you,” he muttered and pulled her skirts up. His fingers found the damp moist space between her legs. He slid his fingers along the sensitive folds until he found her clit. A shiver of pleasure chased over her heated body. “Yes, yes,” she said when he rubbed across the sensitive nub. “Don’t stop.” She was so wet, and she ached, hungry for him to continue touching her. He guided one finger inside where she had felt an unknown urgency to receive his touch. Her body clenched around the intrusion as he slid his finger deeper, but her desire was too strong to stop him. Her legs relaxed, moving wider apart, welcoming his further explorations. Her mind swirled, overcome with emotions flooding across her in a wave of unfamiliar feelings. Heat, shivers of desire, an unbearable ache, and hunger, but for what, she wasn’t sure. His fingers moved across her clit to the same rhythm that his lips suckled on her nipple. He soon slipped one finger, and then a second, inside her wetness. The intimacy overwhelmed her. Unfamiliar sensations coursed

through her veins. She wanted more. His unrelenting thumb brushed across her clit until she almost couldn’t bear it. Suddenly, rolling waves began where he moved his fingers in and out of her. She stiffened. “Let it take you, my love.” His words urged her on. She let go, and exploded in a bright light of warmth and wave after wave of release. Unable to control her breathing, she tilted her head back. He swallowed her cry in his mouth. As her consciousness of her surroundings returned, she realized she lay against his upright body. He’d straightened her skirts and was moving the top of her gown into place. “You are all right?” he asked bending down to stare into her face. Embarrassed, she looked away from him. “What just happened to me?” He chuckled. “You had your first, but hopefully not last orgasm.” “I, but you-” “Don’t worry. I enjoyed myself thoroughly, but now we’d better get you back before you’re missed. Can you walk?” She nodded. Weak-kneed, she held onto his arm as they strolled back the way they’d come. Gradually the trembling and weakness subsided. A breath of cool air brushed her cheeks and coherent thought returned. No one else was around, but what if someone had seen them? She’d be ruined. Whatever was she thinking? She didn’t think when near him. “You go inside first. I’ll wait a while so no one realizes we were out here together,” he said. “By the way,” he added before she moved away from him. “We’ll call this encounter a draw. I assume our wager is definitely back on.” Heat rushed to her face. She didn’t look at him, but nodded yes. Peeking around the door, she saw the dancing continued. No one appeared to see her as she reentered. This time she did go to the retiring room put aside for ladies to

refresh themselves during the dance. Two ladies left as she entered. They didn’t seem to notice anything different about her appearance. She did. Her pink lips and flushed face reflected back at her as she gazed in the mirror. She poured water into a basin and splashed her cheeks until her coloring returned to normal. She smoothed her hair, shook out the skirt of her gown and left to find her mother. Lady Bartley and an old friend sat near the dance floor, chatting. Mama glanced her way then resumed her conversation. A young man, Tabitha had met earlier, came across the room and asked her to dance. Attempting to appear normal, she agreed and followed him onto the dance floor. Her head swirled with thoughts and emotions. She pushed them away for now. Later she’d remember each touch, each feeling, and hope again that she wouldn’t be exposed. **** Sterling waited in the darkness for his body to cool. His cock was still hard and pulsing. Tabby had been much more responsive than he’d expected. When he’d slipped his finger into her hot pussy, he’d almost exploded. He ached with wanting to bury himself inside her sweet body. Pacing across the terrace, he tried to divert his thoughts from her sweet mouth, tender breasts, and warm, wet passage. How had a simple maid thrown an experienced man into such a bother of confusion? The wager had been a bad idea. This might be one contest he lost, but he wanted the prize more than any other. He needed to go back inside before he was missed. Striding to the French windows, he watched the dancers as they glided by. There she was smiling up at a young man, who looked barely out of the schoolroom. The willowy graceful movements of her body had his cock stirring again. Damn the woman. He stepped inside and headed away from where her mother waited for Tabitha.

Chapter Six “She’s gone. You can stop dancing with every debutante in the place,” Trout said. “It’s about time we left and found an interesting card game.” “Whose gone? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve been meeting the current crop of debutantes per instruction from my mother.” “Why bother? You know the one who interests you the most.” “And how would you know that?” “Sparks fly whenever you and Miss Bartley get in the same room. I’m surprised no one else has noticed. But enough of that, let’s leave and go where we can have fun.” “Perhaps you’re right. Several of the ladies, in particularly Lady Jane are looking expectantly this way. I don’t want to raise her or anyone else’s hopes.” As they went to get their coats, Trout glanced back. “You are leaving several disappointed young ladies behind.” Sterling shrugged. “Mama will be pleased that I’ve stayed this long. That’s all that matters. I’m trying to be excessively careful with doing as she asks. Usually I’d laugh away her determined efforts to see me wed, but it gives her something to think about instead of father.” “Be careful. Before you realize, she’ll have you wed. Then she’ll want grandchildren.” “You are rather obsessing about this marriage thing tonight, Trout. Perhaps I should worry about you, rather than you being concerned for my welfare.”

57

“Go ahead, tease me, and ignore my warnings. I’ll be glad to attend your upcoming wedding.” “Nonsense. Come on. Let’s find that card game you mentioned.” Sterling leaned back and stretched out his legs in the carriage. He recalled with clarity the touch and taste of Tabby. What a nonsensical nickname her family had given her. He’d overheard her sister call her by that name. It fit, and he liked it. She stretched and curled her body around him like a cat. Her skin was petal soft, like the most expensive velvet, and she had lips that tasted of sweet cherries. When he’d slipped his finger in the tight heat of her pussy, his cock hardened and his hunger to take her had almost overwhelmed him. For most of the night, he had deliberately tried to erase her from his mind and body. He’d danced with one after another of the most popular ladies this season. They bored him. He’d caught himself looking out of the corner of his eye for her to go by dancing with someone else. She’d aroused the other men’s attention and curiosity. When a small duckling becomes a swan, there are always those surprised and attracted. Glancing across at Trout, he wondered if she was really interested in his friend. How would he feel if Trout and she married? There was nothing for it, but to make his move or lose his friend. To see Trout as her husband would be unbearable. He didn’t want to wed just yet, but an idea had begun to form in his head. He remembered his idea of inviting guests to his house this summer. At least for the one weekend, the house wouldn’t be so empty. He’d talk with his mother tomorrow. There’d be enough ladies for all the single men, and mothers or lady’s maids for conventions sake. He grinned, thinking about the vast acreage around his estate. A couple might get lost from the group and find themselves alone. Yes, he liked that idea very much. “What so funny?” Trout asked. “Nothing. Looks like we’ve arrived,” Sterling pointed out as the carriage slowed and moved toward the side of the road.

“Let’s go win. I feel lucky tonight.” **** Tabitha hadn’t slept last night. When she closed her eyes, she felt Lord Sterling’s body against hers and those unfamiliar aches and heat, desire, and hunger in her body. His actions hadn’t caused the feelings to lessen, but strengthen. The idea of wanting and needing to see him frustrated her. She’d never needed or wanted anyone. She liked her own company. What started out as a lark after hearing their wager had become much more than she’d expected. She’d hoped to experiment and find out if the articles she read about men and women were accurate. The books described the attraction between a man and a woman. Never having experienced it, she’d been confident she’d have no problem keeping the situation under control. Although, now, she felt neither confident, nor in control. It was like being in a rowboat without a paddle or map. After dressing, Tabitha went to the small dining room hoping her mother had finished breakfast and gone out shopping. As usual lately, luck was not with her. “You look terrible. Are you sick?” “No, Mama. I guess I was too excited, so I didn’t sleep much.” Mama eyed her as she went to the sideboard and helped herself to eggs and ham before joining her parents. Tabitha sighed when the maid poured her tea. Her father glanced around his paper. “Had a good time at the ball last night, I gather.” “Yes, Papa. It was rather disconcerting to be asked to dance so much.” “That must tell you what a difference a few changes in your appearance can make,” her mother said. Tabitha didn’t answer. Instead, she ate her eggs and took sips of the strong, hot tea. Her parents eyed her suspiciously but began to talk

Scandalous Seduction

59

about mutual acquaintances. Watching their interaction, Tabitha tried to imagine her parents meeting, feeling the same emotions she’d felt last night, doing similar things. She shivered and blinked. No way, it was an impossible picture. Was it normal to feel so much? She dared not ask Mary, her married sister. She’d go right to Mama, concerned I even knew the questions to ask. Ah! Her friend, Anna, married last year. Just the person to ask and she’d keep Tabitha’s confidences. Later, when she told her mother her plans to visit Anna, Mama stopped her. “You must stay in for a while this afternoon, in case you have gentlemen callers.” “No one is going to call on me, Mama. Last night I was a novelty, and they satisfied their curiosity. I want to go see Anna. We haven’t talked in a month or more, and she may be leaving for the country soon.” “You may go later in the afternoon,” her mother remained firm, “after your visitors leave. Now go and put on that lovely day gown you got from the dressmaker’s yesterday.” Feeling stubborn and out of sorts, Tabitha slipped into the library as soon as her mother was out of sight. Much smaller than the one at home, but still, it was one of the few places she felt comfortable. Here she didn’t have to please anyone but herself. She loved escaping into the stories of people and distant places. Engrossed in a book, she didn’t notice the passage of time. The door opening brought her head up. “You have guests,” her mother whispered. “Look at you. That gown is wrinkled.” She shook her head and frowned. “Whatever will I do with you? There is no hope for it. You will never marry.” Tabitha brushed at the wrinkles in her skirt. “I’ll run upstairs and change, Mama.” “There is no time. Two gentlemen wait in the drawing room. Come along.” Reluctantly putting her book aside, Tabitha followed behind her

mother. The two men stood by the fireplace. They turned as Tabitha and her mother entered. “Miss Bartley,” the taller man bowed and walked to her handing her a small bouquet of mixed flowers. The shorter man followed. They’d been two of the many who’d asked her to dance for the first time last night. Tabitha thanked them, and her mother took the flowers, handing them to the maid to put into a vase. “Please, be seated,” her mother said. She motioned Tabitha forward. Tabitha sat and tried to remember how her sisters had handled their callers. A horse race was coming up in two weeks time. She brought up the subject and sat back as they regaled her about the horses and the excitement of racing. Yes indeed, men were amazingly easy to control. Then why did she feel so out of control with Sterling? a little imp in her head asked. Refusing to go there in her thoughts, she asked another question which set them off again. When they finally rose to leave, the taller man bent over her hand. “This has been a delightful visit, Miss Bartley. Perhaps you might honor me with your company later this afternoon on a ride through Hyde Park?” She certainly couldn’t imagine anything she’d like less than spending more time in this man’s company. Yet, what could she say? He wasn’t unattractive. But, they had nothing in common. She visualized sitting in the carriage in awkward silence. There seemed no way out though. She opened her mouth to speak just as someone else walked in and spoke up. “I couldn’t help but hear your invitation to Miss Bartley. I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for another time my good man. I requested her company today, last night at the ball.” Sterling stood in the doorway, apparently at ease with what he’d just said. “Sorry, Sterling, I didn’t know. It’s quite all right, Miss Bartley. Perhaps another time.” He and the other man nodded to all and

quickly made their departure. Sterling came into the room followed by Lord Trout. A mischievous smile lit the latter’s face. Sterling bent over Tabitha’s mother’s hand. “My daughter did not inform me, young man, of your offer to take her riding today.” Her expression told them all she was not so dumb as to be bamboozled by them. “Did I forget to ask you, Miss Bartley? I thought I had. I meant too.” He flashed those twinkling eyes her way. “I agree with Mama. My memory must be bad, because I remember no such invitation.” “Then I will correct my mistake.” He stepped in front of Tabitha and with a solemn expression asked, “My dear, Miss Bartley, will you honor me with your presence on a ride through the park this afternoon?” Tabitha fought the laughter trying to bubble up. She glanced at her mother, who nodded yes. “I will be delighted to join you, Lord Sterling.” “Won’t you gentlemen sit and have tea with us?” Lady Bartley asked. Lord Trout moved across to sit next to Tabitha’s chair. She grinned at him and noted the slight frown Sterling directed at his friend. “How do you take your tea, Lord Trout?” Tabitha stood, reached for a cup, and poured tea from the silver teapot. “Plenty of sugar and cream, and those sandwiches and biscuits look very good.” Tabitha let the laughter out now as she piled his plate with food, then handed him the plate and tea. “Lord Sterling?” He had taken the seat beside her mother, but when Tabitha spoke, Sterling came to her side and studied the various tempting items on the tray. His fragrance made her draw a deep breath savoring the familiar smell of him. He smiled a quick grin as though he heard her

breathe. Reaching around her to take a small sandwich and taste it, he managed to brush against her hand. Just the slight touch sent a jolt up her arm. She stepped back and tried to pour his tea without letting the tremor in her hands show to the others watching. “Have you decided, Lord Sterling?” “Easy on the sugar, but cream, and I’ll take several of the watercress sandwiches and the small cakes.” He took the tea she handed him and went back to his seat to wait while she arranged his chosen items on a plate. Tabitha noted her mother’s sharp expression looking from him to her. He’d aroused Mama’s protective instinct. She expected her mother to cancel their outing at any moment. But, Mama did something totally unexpected. “It is a beautiful day to be outside, and I’ve been feeling rather weary lately. Perhaps a ride in the park is just what I need to brighten my day. Would you mind if I join you and my daughter this afternoon, my lord?” She looked directly at Sterling. Trout sounded like he strangled a laugh, before he covered it up as a cough. Tabitha’s mouth dropped, but she recovered quite fast. Turning her back to Mama, she poured their tea and after handing Mama’s to her, Tabitha sank onto the chair by Trout. Lord Sterling had started to take a sip of tea and froze at her mother’s words, very briefly. Now, he took his time, taking a sip of tea and putting the cup down on the side table. “We’d be happy to have your company, Lady Bartley. Shall we say four o’clock this afternoon? I’ll bring my larger carriage. Lord Trout, would you care to join us?” This time Trout did choke on his tea and coughed for several minutes. Her mother went to his side and patted his back. “We’ll take that for a yes, my lord. What a fine outing this will be for all of us,” Tabitha’s mother said. It didn’t take long after that for the men to finish their

refreshments and say good-bye. Tabitha prepared herself for her mother’s lecture, but Mama only smiled as she left the room and went upstairs. This was all very confusing. It was too late to go out and get back in time for their ride, so Tabitha retreated to her hideout, the library. She curled up in a large soft chair and tried to understand what happened to her every time Lord Sterling came close. His very presence made her uneasy. His smell tantalized her, and when he bent close the heat of his body poured over her. Touching his skin sent sparks of fire sizzling across her nerves. She both wanted it to stop and wanted it to never end. How contrary? She’d never been such a silly woman. Her father planned for them to leave at the end of the week as others would begin their way home for the summer. When the heat hit London, the smells became even worse. It was no place to be. At least going home would get her away from Sterling. Hopefully, by the end of the summer, she’d have recovered her equilibrium. She almost wished she’d never taken on the wager that started her rolling down this hill of emotions and confusion. Almost, but not quite. If she was anything, it was honest. She hadn’t forgotten the wonderful feelings of last night. Just thinking about what happened between her and Sterling made her body warm and started a yearning deep inside her. Part of her wanted to learn more, feel more, yet all her mother’s teachings warned her about such behavior. Well actually, her mother warned her about even letting people suspect such behavior. She’d never believe one of her daughters would do such things as Tabitha allowed outside the dance last evening. If she didn’t get away from Sterling soon, Tabitha feared she might allow him to show her even more. A low ache made her stomach muscles tighten. He touched her in her most private areas. She’d allowed him. Wanted him too. Heat rose in her face. Oh, yes, she was in trouble.

Chapter Seven Her mother allowed Lord Sterling to sit beside Tabitha in the open carriage. Lady Bartley sat by Lord Trout and patted his hand. “Too bad you don’t have a pretty lady along with you.” “But I do, Lady Bartley.” He nodded to her and smiled. Tabitha had to grin when she saw her mother blush. “You have met your match, Mama.” “So I have. This promises to be a lovely afternoon.” She rapped her fan across Trout’s knuckles. “And don’t try anything young man,” she warned. “My husband is still an excellent swordsman.” Trout threw back his head and laughed. “I see where your daughter gets her mischievous sense of humor. Don’t worry, my lady, I have instructions from my mother to be on my best behavior. She said you two have known each other for many years, so I’m sure she’ll hear if I’m not.” “Neither she nor I like that word ‘many.’" This made them all laugh. Tabitha found herself relaxing back against the soft, seat cushions. The afternoon promised to be much less tense than she’d expected, until Lord Sterling turned his attention on her and her breath caught His dark green eyes pierced right through her. Leaning toward her, he whispered. “Your mother is a smart woman. You are safe, this time. Never doubt, I’ll find another way to get you alone and then, my darling girl, I will show you some of those different aspects of love making that you read about.” Her nipples tightened at his words, and his breath on her ear caused shivers down her spine. Tabitha glanced across at her mother.

Thank goodness, something or someone outside the carriage had captured her attention. “Behave,” she whispered and moved more toward the opposite side of the carriage. She pointedly ignored him and studied the passing scenery, relieved when they entered the park. At least here with so many people promenading, he’d have to be on his best behavior. She hoped. The carriage moved slowly as they were greeted by a number of acquaintances. Some raised their eyebrows and didn’t attempt to hide their surprise. Lord Sterling chuckled several times annoying Tabitha. “What is so funny?” she asked. “Don’t you love arousing people’s curiosity? With your mother along, I’m sure they are expecting an announcement at anytime.” “Doesn’t that bother you?” He tilted his head and appeared to consider her question. “Not particularly,” he said, finally. Her mother ignored them, while she nodded and waved at friends. Trout had a constant teasing smile on his face when looking across at them. Tabitha turned to Lord Sterling. “You must have told Lord Trout about our wager. Does he think you’ll win?” She kept her voice low and was glad for the clatter of wheels and voices raised in greeting. “My dear, Miss Bartley, I have only told him we have another wager. He does not approve.” “Please, you’re not talking to some simpering miss who’ll hang on your every word and believe them. He started the first wager.” His eyes twinkled at her, and she almost sighed. Thanks to her mother’s abruptly interrupting her, she didn’t make a fool of herself. “Tabitha, you are missing people who are trying to get your attention. See there is your friend Anna and her husband.” “Anna,” Tabitha waved briskly. Anna’s husband directed his driver to move their carriage to the side of Sterling’s. “Tabitha, I didn’t know you were back in town,” Anna said. She

and her husband had barely acknowledged the others before Anna continued. “We must get together, Tabby. Can you come for nuncheon tomorrow?” “Definitely. I’ve missed you.” “Thomas,” Anna smiled toward her husband, “will be going out on business, so we’ll have a nice, private coze. See you tomorrow around one o’clock.” She waved as her carriage was forced to move on. “I’m so glad you pointed her out to me, Mama. We don’t see each other nearly enough since she married.” The rest of the ride went by without Lord Sterling trying to unsettle her. Tabitha was both relieved and sorry to see the outing end. “I must admit, I’m glad they didn’t accept our offer for tea,” her mother said. “I wish to speak with you privately.” Tabitha’s heart dropped. Mama was not blind. She must have noticed the various interchanges between Lord Sterling and herself. However, could she explain their behavior? She’d wait to see what Mama asked. She had no intention of accidentally giving her more information than she already had. Dragging her feet, she followed Mama into the back sitting room. Lady Bartley directed the maid to bring them tea. She puttered around the room checking for dust and moving a figurine from one spot to another. The maid returned with the teapot and a plate of small sandwiches and biscuits. After she left, Mama poured their tea. “Sit,” she said to Tabitha, who’d been standing close to the door. She handed Tabitha her teacup and then, after serving herself, she sat directly across from her daughter. Can silence be any louder, Tabitha wondered as the minutes slowly ticked by? She’d never seen Mama act so strangely. She was determined not to be the one to start the conversation. Mama sipped her tea and ate a small watercress sandwich. Then as if coming to a decision, she put down her cup and eyed Tabitha.

“What is there between you and Lord Sterling?” “Not anything any different than there is between me and Lord Trout.” Tabitha hated lying, especially to Mama. Her mother studied her. In the silence, Tabitha felt the blush creeping up on her cheeks. “Lord Trout might show an interest if you encouraged him, although I’ve heard the dear man was jilted a number of years ago and has shown no serious interest in any other woman since. But, back to Lord Sterling. There is a definite tension around the two of you.” She shook her head at Tabitha. “Don’t deny it. I am neither blind nor stupid. You thought I didn’t notice the whispers between the two of you, or how he manages to brush against you or touch you when he thinks no one is watching.” She stopped for a second and took another sip of tea. Tabitha tried to think of what to say. Mama, Lord Sterling is showing me the reality of what I read in Papa’s library about seduction. That would certainly go over pleasantly. “Well?” Her mother stared at her, determination in her eyes. “I am attracted to him, Mama, but that is all. It is very strange for me, as no one else has had my interest in all these years.” That was a good touch, reminding her she was almost an old maid. She had started to feel confident when her mother spoke up. “Attraction is one thing. To act on it is another. I believe you are not telling me something. I warn you, I’ll be watching closely until we return home. I’m going to suggest to your father that we definitely leave the end of the week. He’ll be happy to comply.” “Really, Mama, you are in a coil over nothing. But, I’ll be ready to go home. It will be pleasant to go back to wearing my comfortable dresses and spending my days doing what I like.” Her mother frowned, but didn’t respond at first. She finished her tea, then walked to the door. “Remember where ever you go from now on, either I or Hilda will be with you. Hilda can be your chaperone tomorrow when you visit Anne. Strange I’d never expected to ever worry about you.” With that said, her mother walked out.

**** The day was rainy, but Tabitha managed to get out of her carriage and into Anna’s town house without getting wet. Anna wrapped her arms around Tabitha and her familiar floral scent floated around Tabitha. “I’m so glad you didn’t decide to cancel. It’s a dreary day, but quite comfortable inside my small sitting room with a fire burning.” Anna turned to Hilda. “You know where the kitchen is Hilda, Sally is waiting to have lunch with you,” Anna said, naming her nanny. The two women had known each other for years since Anna and Tabitha often visited each other. Hilda nodded and headed down the side corridor. Anna watched until she was out of sight. Then, she took Tabitha’s arm and pulled her along to the room she’d taken for her own. Anna closed the door behind them. “I so love this room. We can visit, be comfortable, and private.” Tabitha saw a small table set for two by one of the windows. Rain ran down the windowpane, the outside appeared stark and grey. Inside, the fire gave out warmth and candles lit up the space. The colors of pink and white fit her petite, blonde friend. “Here, sit by me on the sofa.” Anna patted the pink and white damask covering. Tabitha joined her. “Now tell me all about you and the handsome Lord Sterling. Is he the reason you’re wearing such attractive gowns and have loosened you hairstyle? I must say I never realized how attractive you’d be without your glasses.” Tabitha laughed. “I forgot how you run on when you have questions. I’ll tell you all of it, but first I need a glass of that white wine I see opened on the table.” Anna giggled. “My dear husband would shake his head at me drinking so early in the day, but this is a special occasion. I think we

shall finish the bottle.” She went to the table and came back with two wine glasses filled to the brim. “I’m sure, knowing how difficult it would be to get your glasses away from you and get you to wear different clothes, that this will be a long story.” They clicked their glasses and Tabitha finally told someone the whole story, well almost. She held back the occurrence on the terraced yard during the dance. “I love that you over heard them. How daring of you to challenge them at their own game, but that second wager—” her eyes darkened, “you were going down a dangerous path. I’m happy you decided to cancel.” Tabitha didn’t admit she and Lord Sterling had agreed to continue and decided on very clear terms. After a full glass of wine, they went to the table. “This is good trout,” Tabitha said. “All the food tastes even better than usual. It must be the company,” Anna teased. “We’ve been talking about me,” Tabitha said. “How are you doing? You appear to enjoy being married.” “Unlike you, my friend, I always wanted to marry. I’ve never understood your aversion to it.” “I’m not sure I can explain.” Tabitha thought a moment and continued. “Our parents control us until we marry or become of an age where we are considered able to make decisions. If we marry, then the husband more or less owns the wife. He controls his wife’s money, and what she can and can’t do.” “That’s a distorted view. Your parents and mine have been happily married for years. Surely, you can’t believe my mother or yours would let their husband keep them from doing what they wished. Of course, society demands a certain decorum.” “Then you are happy with your choice of a husband?” Anna reached across the table taking Tabitha’s hand. “I’m

overjoyed. The pleasure of a close relationship cannot be discounted. My husband is all that is generous and loving.” “Do you enjoy the intimate side?” Tabitha felt her cheeks blush when she asked. Anna fell back in peals of laughter. “Don’t tell me you’re worried about all those old tales of pain and embarrassment. Mama told me that loving women enjoyed the act of love between husband and wife. Thank goodness she wasn’t like some mothers who frighten their daughters to death.” Tabitha knew she was turning redder. “I’m not afraid. I’ve read all about it in books.” This sent Anna into another peal of laughter. “Here, have some more wine.” She refilled their glasses. “And you’d better eat more. If I send you home soused Lady Bartley will never let you visit me again.” “What is so funny?” “You thinking an explanation in a book can really tell you what it’s like to be with a man whom you love, one who excites you, and every time he comes into a room the air sizzles.” “You really feel that way?” Anna nodded. “Really.” She tipped her head to the side. “Does Lord Sterling do that for you?” Tabitha wanted to deny it, but she couldn’t. “Yes.” “What do you want to know? I sense you’re holding something back.” “I’m thinking of letting him make love to me the next time we’re alone.” The words rushed out of her mouth. “If someone finds out, you’d be ruined unless he marries you, and then people will say he only did it because he was forced too.” Tabitha opened her mouth to speak and Anna stopped her. “But, if he sincerely cares for you and you for him sometimes things happen.” “You did it.” “Hush, don’t tell all the servants. Yes, we did.”

“I knew there must be others that wanted to know before they committed themselves forever. How, when?” “We had an opportunity to visit his hunting lodge. Our parents thought we went riding. We did. They never suspected, nor know even now that we made a stop.” “My mother is making sure I have no such chance. She or Hilda will be dogging my steps wherever I go.” Anna patted her mouth with her napkin. “Men can be very ingenious when given a chance. Lord Sterling will find a way if he is interested, and it sounds as though he is.” Changing the subject, Anna suggested they take their wine glasses and go on a tour of her home. “You’ve never seen the upstairs, and I’ve done some remodeling in the drawing room.” She led the way. Her husband returned, as they came back down the stairs, Tabitha knew it was time to leave. “When will you return to your country estate?” Tabitha asked. Anna glanced at her handsome husband. “Next week?” “Yes,” he agreed. “I’m tired of town and ready to ride across my own acreage.” Tabitha saw the quick loving glances they gave each other, and when her husband leaned down to kiss her cheek, Anna blushed prettily. “Thank you for the delicious meal and visit. I hope we can get together sometime during the summer.” “You must come for an overnight visit,” Anna said. She walked Tabitha to the door, hugged her, and waved good-bye to her and Hilda. “That was a long visit,” Hilda said grumpily. “We had a lot of catching up to do.” “Humph, from the laughter and-” she sniffed at Tabitha, “the smell of wine it seems to me you had a bit too much.” “Don’t scold Hilda, or I’ll leave you behind when I get married.” The shock of her words shut Hilda up, temporarily anyway.

Chapter Eight Tabitha and her mother were finishing breakfast, before leaving town that morning, when the butler brought a covered letter to Mama. Her mother glanced at the seal. “This appears to be from Lady Sterling.” She quickly opened the missive. “We’re invited to a weekend party, at Sterling Court. Obviously this is being arranged to entertain the younger set, but parents and/or chaperones are included, of course.” Lady Bartley raised her head and studied Tabitha sitting across from her. “Did Lord Sterling mention having a party at his home?” she asked. Startled, Tabitha couldn’t stop her cheeks from flushing. No, he mentioned a weekend with the two of us at his house, she immediately thought. “He hasn’t said anything about a party, Mama.” Lady Bartley held up the invitation. “We are invited to their estate in two weeks time.” “Papa won’t want to leave home so soon,” Tabitha said. “No, he’ll be unhappy at the suggestion. I believe Hilda and I can chaperone you without his help. He’ll be happy to not be included.” “We don’t have to go, Mama. I am looking forward to being home.” “If I let you refuse this invitation, you’ll spend all summer riding with your father or in his library. But worse, you’ll return to your old way of dressing and ignoring eligible gentlemen. I’ll not allow you to become a recluse again. It’s my fault I wasn’t more determined about your clothes and inclusion in activities sooner. I shan’t fail this time.

“You’ve attracted several lords, any of which would make a fine husband. We mustn’t let them forget about you.” “Really, Mama if they are going to forget me over the summer, then they cannot be very interested.” “For once you will follow my advice. We will go to Sterling Court. You have a lovely new wardrobe and shall dazzle the gentlemen.” “Dazzle?” Tabitha laughed. “Me? Mama, I fear you are in for a grave disappointment.” “We shall see. Are you packed and ready to leave? Papa will be pacing a spot in the foyer rug if we don’t hurry.” “Yes.” Tabitha wanted to go home, but she wasn’t sure whether she was prepared to spend a weekend in Sterling’s presence so soon. She had hoped that after being away from him for a few months, when they did meet again, he’d not affect her any differently than all the other men. All those strange feelings would go away after having some time alone. She’d regain her equilibrium. She really preferred the whole summer before she saw him, but at least a few weeks might help. And, if you keep lying to yourself, you might even convince your heart to stop pounding whenever his name is spoken. **** The first week home went by quietly. Tabitha enjoyed riding the fields with her father and reading in his library in the afternoons. Each day slipped by without any unusual occurrences. Peaceful, just as she wanted, she told herself, until Monday, when the post arrived. “Tabitha,” her mother called to her as she and her father returned from their ride. “Come have tea with me.” She dismounted and gave the reins to a stable hand, then waved good-bye to Papa. Mama stood on the front steps, and Tabitha strode across the dusty drive and joined her.

“I need to go upstairs and change before tea.” “Go ahead. I’ll be in the sitting room.” Curious as to what her mother wanted, Tabitha hurried with her toilet. Hilda helped her into a fresh gown. Tabitha splashed her face with cool water then sat while Hilda smoothed her coiffure. “Do you know what Mama wants?” Tabitha asked Hilda. “No. You’ll know soon enough if you sit still while I try and finish fixing these flyaway strands of your hair. You must have taken off your bonnet while riding.” She had, and she fought to keep from smiling. Mama and Hilda were certain she’d ruin her complexion if she didn’t protect her face from the sun. Tabitha loved the warmth of sunshine on her face. “I see that mischievous look. I’m right. You’ll go to the party this coming weekend with unfashionable color on your cheeks.” Hilda shook her head. “It’s going to be a miracle to see you ever get married.” “I do wish Mama and you would stop harping on my upcoming marriage. If I don’t receive an offer, it wouldn’t be the first time. Other women have stayed single their whole life.” “Pitiful, dependent women. I’d think you’d hate that description said of you.” Tabitha knew Hilda was right. She might fight the idea of marriage, but she really saw no other good choice. She’d kept thoughts of Sterling buried deep, and she’d succeeded for a few days. Now, those thoughts came more frequently, and the memories of how he made her feel. Shrugging, she stood. “Enough, Hilda. I’m only going downstairs to tea with Mama.” Hilda didn’t respond, only waved her away. Tabitha rushed down the steps, then slowed at the bottom and walked sedately to the sitting room. “Come in and join me,” Mama said and motioned her to the chair beside her. “Did you have a good ride?” “I always enjoy riding with Papa. The weather was beautiful after

last evening’s rain.” She took the cup Mama handed her and sat. “The post came.” Her mother reached behind her chair and handed a small, brown paper wrapped box to Tabitha. “A package arrived for you.” “For me?” Surprised, Tabitha looked over the front and back, and shook it. “Be careful. There might be something breakable inside,” her mother said. “Is it from you and Papa?” “No.” Her mother smiled. “Open it. See who sent the package and what they sent you.” Her mother handed her the small sewing scissors. Tabitha clipped the cord binding the paper. After removing the outer covering, she found a white box. When she opened it, a slight musty smell rose from the contents. A book of poems, an antique, with a soft leather cover lay inside. Tabitha opened the first page and found a small card. Saw this in the window of the bookstore and thought of you. See you soon. Lord Sterling. What a beautiful and thoughtful gift,” her mother said and reached for the box. “May I see it?” Tabitha handed the book and card to her mother and kept her head down as she blinked furiously to keep tears from falling. Whatever was the matter with her to let a gift cause her to want to cry? He couldn’t have known how she’d longed for this particular version of poems. She’d seen the volume and stopped each time she went by the store to admire the book and the antique covering. The price had precluded her buying it with her allowance, and she’d resisted asking her parents for the money. She swallowed around the lump in her throat. “This is an expensive gift. I’m not sure it’s appropriate for you to accept, when there is no understanding between the two of you.” “Oh, Mama, please. I’ve wanted this volume for so long.”

76

Paige Cameron

“Did you mention it to him?” Her mother frowned. “I hope not, as that would be very inappropriate.” “No! I haven’t any idea how he’d know I wanted this particular book. He does know I like to read.” Her mother ran her hands over the leather bindings. “This is very encouraging. He must think well of you and approves of your love of reading. We will see how next week goes. But, I will keep this gift until it’s decided whether it should be returned or not.” She carefully wrapped the volume back up in the brown paper. Tabitha started to speak. Mama put up her hand. “No further discussion. If he’d sent you a plain book, not an antique treasure, then of course there’d be no problem. I’ll talk with your father and possibly his mother.” “Please, can’t I just keep it in my room until you decide?” Mama shook her head no. “Drink your tea. It’s getting cold.” After her mother left, Tabitha went to sit by the window. Why did he send a gift? Did he really care for her, or was this just another way to keep her interest aroused? The man insisted on intruding into her thoughts, reminding her of their encounters when his lips and hands had sent a fever through her body. She went out of the room and strode down the corridor to a side door. Walking briskly along the path to the stables, she tried to clear her mind of him and the gift—a tease to keep him in her thoughts. She’d show him and Mama how much control she had. No man would dominate her thoughts or her life. Next weekend she’d find a quiet man, perhaps a little weak, but one she’d be able to direct. If marriage was the only option, she’d make her own choice. It wouldn’t be the arrogant, so sure of himself, Lord Sterling. **** The second gift arrived on Thursday. Tabitha knew as soon as she

saw her mother’s face—confused, questioning, and slightly perturbed. “Have you been writing Lord Sterling?” she asked. “Not at all, Mama.” Her mother brought her into the sitting room and shut the door. “Here, another package arrived this morning. I do hope this is a more appropriate gift.” After Tabitha removed the plain brown wrapper, the inside box was wrapped in white paper embossed with silver. Tabitha hesitated. “Perhaps we should return it unopened. I’m inclined to believe it will not be appropriate. I can’t endure having to give the present back after I see it.” “Open it,” her mother said. Fingers feeling clumsy, Tabitha tried to remove the paper without tearing it. She removed the lid from the box and lifted out the fan. Cream colored lace and pearls edged the outside. When she spread it open, a painting of flowers and birds in all the colors of the rainbow greeted her. “It’s the most beautiful fan I’ve ever seen.” “A fan is usually an appropriate gift, but Lord Sterling has given you one with valuable pearls strung through delicate lace. I will take both presents and return them to him when we arrive.” Her mother sat back in her chair, the package on her lap. “Has anything happened between the two of you that I should know?” She squinted at Tabby. “Whatever do you mean, Mama? How could anything have happened? You and Hilda have been with me everywhere I went with Lord Sterling.” “Tabby, that is not a direct answer, but I’ll let it go for now. Just be warned, I’ll be watching you closely at Sterling Court. When you go on outings, it will be with a group. Furthermore, you will stay with them the whole time.” “Of course, Mama.” “This will be an interesting weekend. Perhaps when we return, you two will be betrothed. Don’t mention either of these gifts to your sister, Edna. She’ll be returning later today from visiting her future-

in-laws, and I don’t need both of you pleading with me to keep them.” Her mother smiled. She reached across and touched Tabitha’s cheek. “I think and hope Lord Sterling will offer for you. He’d make a fine husband, and finally, I can quit worrying about your future if you marry him.” Tabitha started to ask her mother questions, but was afraid she might give away more than she wanted too. She had her doubts Lord Sterling had anything on his mind other than winning the wager. The one they’d decided to continue when they discussed it at the dance. She had to win. How? Excusing herself, she went to her bedroom and to the small writing desk. She took out paper and sprinkled it with her powder then shook off the excess. Let’s see, what shall I say? Dear Lord Sterling, I’ve received your lovely gifts. Of course, as you knew, they are completely inappropriate. I smile at the obvious attempts to arouse my interest in you. Have I left an indelible reminder of myself? You must recall touching my skin and tasting my lips. How my body heated at your touch. I wonder how I’d react to a different man. You see, I have no one else to compare you too. Men have many experiences and are able to make knowledgeable choices. Women are too sheltered. I shall simply have to find another prospect to test whether you are truly the best at the art of seduction. Surely, that is an important knowledge to have when contemplating marriage, as you must be to have sent me such beautiful and expensive presents. “I’m quite looking forward to this weekend and all the fun and discoveries I’ll make before I return home. Most sincerely,

Miss Tabitha Bartley. She addressed it to him and put personal on the covering. Disaster would no doubt fall on her head if this letter got into the wrong hands, but the danger excited her. Life had been too peaceful since coming home. She liked this delicious daring streak she’d discovered in herself. She hurried downstairs and put her missive inside the mailbag. Hopefully, he’d receive her note before their arrival.

Chapter Nine Tabitha leaned forward to get a better view of Sterling Court. The manor house had obviously had several additions added over the years. Some of the turrets from the original castle still stood. The entrance to the house had been remodeled, and a covered portico stood in front of a flight of stairs leading to double mahogany doors. “Do sit back, Tabby,” her mother said. “You mustn’t look too interested or excited.” “I’m only interested in the varying architecture, Mama.” Her mother smiled and patted her hand. “Too much reading,” she mumbled. The double doors stood open. Several people had gathered at the entrance to greet the arrivals. As the carriage in front of them moved away, Tabitha’s took its place. Now, she saw Lady Sterling and her son, Lord Sterling. He turned his head to glance at the carriage, and Tabitha found herself leaning back out of sight. After not seeing him for two weeks, she’d hoped her silly heart would not beat out of her chest at the first sight of him. But, it did. She tried to take deep breaths without attracting her mother or Hilda’s attention. Gradually, her heartbeat slowed to normal. As the other guests went inside, their driver opened the carriage door and assisted her mother and Hilda out. Tabitha moved to the carriage door just as Lord Sterling reached the bottom of the stairs. “May I assist you, Miss Bartley?” He put out his hand. She’d forgotten how incredibly handsome he was. His black hair blew in the breeze, and mischief made those green eyes sparkle. She

was glad to take his hand as her legs went weak. He helped her down then turned to greet her mother. “I hope the journey was not tiring for you ladies.” “We are not quite so old that a six hour trip will put us into a decline,” Lady Bartley answered with a bite in her voice. “Certainly not,” Sterling said. “May I say you and your daughter are looking especially lovely?” His mother gave him a hard stare. “You are too full of flummery to suit me, young man. I’ll be keeping a close eye on you.” With that said, she and Hilda started up the steps. “Have you been enjoying your time at home?” Sterling asked, as they followed behind. “I hope you haven’t found the countryside too boring.” “Never boring when I have a horse to ride and a book to read.” “Ah, that means you didn’t miss me at all.” He flashed a grin at her. “I will not add to the high regard you have of yourself by answering that question.” His laughter had both his mother and hers glancing their way. Tabitha groaned. “Now see what you’ve done, I’m blushing. I hate for my face to turn red.” “Your face is quite delectable,” he whispered just before they arrived at the door. “Mother, you have met Lady Bartley. This is her daughter, Miss Tabitha Bartley.” Tabitha curtsied and smiled. His mother greeted her politely, but scrutinized her. “I hope you will enjoy your visit, Miss Bartley. You may follow your mother. One of our maids will show you to your room.” She took a breath and added, “You and your mother will have adjoining rooms.” She sent a suspicious glance to her son and Tabitha before turning to greet another guest. After the maid showed her mother her room, she directed Tabitha to the next door along the corridor. His mother was obviously not pleased with the attention her son had given Tabitha. She couldn’t

blame his mother. She was twenty-six. Lady Sterling would want her son to marry a younger woman, someone in their prime, for a better chance of having an heir. Tabitha sank onto the soft bed. She barely glanced at the attractive, light green room. Her heart ached. If she’d been hoping for anything permanent with Lord Sterling, his mother had just given her the answer. It wouldn’t happen. **** Lady Sterling leaned close to her son and whispered, “You mustn’t show such pronounced preference for any lady unless you’re thinking seriously of making an offer. Miss Bartley is hardly an appropriate choice.” Sterling watched as another carriage rolled to a stop below. “I thought Miss Bartley was from a good family with a fine reputation. True, her father is a Viscount, but that should be rank enough to suit you, Mother.” “She is too old, an old maid. Look below at Lady Jane. Go greet her. She is all that is appropriate for your wife.” He shrugged. “Not necessarily, Mother. But, to please you, I will go down the steps and welcome her and her parents.” He left before his mother could make another comment. This weekend might prove more difficult than he’d thought with both parents watching their every action. Still, he had no intention of giving up. Just touching Tabitha’s hand sent shock waves through his system. His cock hardened as though he was still an awkward young man. He’d had better control of himself at twenty. What was it about Tabby? She wasn’t as beautiful as Lady Jane, who now curtsied before him and put out her hand. Neither did Lady Jane’s touch spark any feelings. Graciously, he spoke to the Potter’s and their daughter then went up the steps with them toward his smiling mother. Still, he couldn’t wait to uncover more of Miss Bartley’s secrets.

**** The drawing room was crowded with mingling guests as they talked and enjoyed tea. Some wandered out onto the veranda and along the flowered walkways. Tabitha stood to the side with her mother. She knew most of the people gathered in this room. She couldn’t prevent a frown when she saw Lady Jane standing in the center with several young men clustered around her. Lord Sterling walked beside his mother greeting their guests, taking time to talk along the way. When they stopped to greet the Potter’s and their daughter, Lady Sterling and her son stayed longer than with others, and it was noticed. A hurt settled in Tabitha’s chest. “His mother approves of that alliance and is letting everyone know,” Lady Bartley spoke in a soft voice to Tabitha. “I must return those gifts. I’ll give them directly to Lord Sterling. His mother would not be pleased if she knew about them. She might make it uncomfortable for you.” “Do whatever you think is best, Mama.” Her mother glanced at Tabitha sharply and began to speak. “Excuse me for interrupting,” Trout said. “I hoped perhaps Miss Bartley would join me for a walk around the gardens. Sterling Court is known for its beautiful landscaping.” Lady Bartley greeted him with a smile. “How good to see you, Lord Trout. I’m sure Tabitha would enjoy going outside.” “Thank you, Lord Trout,” Tabitha said and put out her hand. They strolled out onto the veranda. The air smelled sweet with the mingled fragrances of blooming flowers and trees. Overhead, only a few wisps of clouds floated across the light blue sky. “You look lovely, Miss Bartley, but a tad sad also.” “Are you always so observant, Lord Trout?” “One of my many faults,” he teased.

“Lady Jane is lovely. I was just admiring her,” Tabitha said. “She’s young and the darling of the Ton this season. But never believe she outshines you.” “How sweet of you to try and make me feel less an old maid. Isn’t it silly that women are considered on the shelf shortly after twenty, when men are considered more mature and better qualified to be a husband well into their thirty’s?” “Quite right. We shall have a proclamation written that states all women twenty-two and older are more beautiful, intelligent, and make better wives. We’ll paste the flyers on all the business windows in London.” Tabitha laughed. “Stop. You’ll make me laugh so much my sides will ache.” His expression sobered. “How may I help you?” She touched his arm. “You are such a good friend. You’ll make a wonderful husband for someone.” For a second, she saw a darkness cross his face, then just as quickly, he smiled. “We must have a plan to foil Lady Jane and her parents,” he said. “Do you have one to suggest?” Tabitha asked. “Lord Harold Gresham is known to be quite enamored of Lady Jane. I shall talk with him. If you two showed an interest in each other all the parents will relax. Then on outings, Gresham and I will see that Lady Jane gets diverted to him and you to Sterling.” “What a fanciful, diabolical scheme. I must admit to admiring the way your mind works, Lord Trout.” “Then it’s settled. Tonight if Lord Gresham suddenly shows attention to you, then you’ll know he’s agreed to join us in our ruse.” He turned and led her back toward the house. “This promises to be a very interesting weekend.” **** Sterling managed to escape the guests and go to his study. Jane had hung on his arm all afternoon. He hadn’t had a chance to speak more than a few words to Tabitha. He’d seen Trout and her leave the room. They were gone much too long. This weekend was supposed to be for Tabitha and him to be together. Now, thanks to his mother’s determination to encourage an alliance between Lady Jane and him, and Tabitha’s mother’s scrutiny, nothing was going according to his plan. Outside he heard voices as guests walked along the curved pathways enjoying the outdoors. Sterling poured himself a drink and had taken the first swallow, when he heard a knock on his door. “Come in,” he called out. Stunned, he watched as Lady Bartley walked in carrying two packages. “I hope I haven’t disturbed you, but this seemed the best time to return your lovely gifts.” She placed the two boxes on his desk. Turning, her facial expression showed her displeasure. “You must have known they were quite inappropriate. A man gives a young woman these types of gifts for one of two reasons. Either he plans on asking her to be his wife or his mistress. Which were you considering for my daughter, Lord Sterling?” Sterling clenched his glass. Lady Bartley stood quietly waiting for his response. The woman was uncanny in her observations. “I have the utmost respect for your daughter, Lady Bartley. My gifts were simply for her enjoyment. I admit I saw her gazing at the book one day when I came out of a shop across the street from the bookstore. When she walked on, I crossed to see what had held her interest. I believe we have become friends, and I know of her keen interest in reading.” He stopped, raised his glass, and asked, “Would you like to join me? I have wine or brandy.” “No, thank you. What about the fan?” The woman was persistent. Never did he dream he’d have a mother angry about gifts to her daughter. Well, perhaps he hadn’t chosen wisely.

“It was impulse. I bought one for my mother, a little different, and I saw that one.” He motioned to the box and shrugged. “I am impulsive at times.” Lady Barley turned and went to the door. She opened it and stood in the doorway. “Don’t be with my daughter.” When the door closed, Sterling sank into the nearest chair and took a long swallow of his whiskey. The woman was more frightening than his mother at her best. Damn, what more can go wrong? But, he didn’t plan to give up. His body went hot every time he saw Tabitha. Tonight, he’d find a way to spend some private time with her.

Chapter Ten After dinner, Tabitha and her mother had followed the ladies to the drawing room. Tabitha was glad to see the men soon joined them. Dinner had been drawn out with many tempting dishes and servings of wine. Upset at seeing Lady Jane seated close to the head of the table, Tabitha had perhaps drunk a bit more than she should. The guests formed groups and the sound of voices and laughter filled the air. Candles fluttered from the breeze where a few windows had been cracked open. “May I join you?” A tall, blond man stepped to their side and addressed Tabitha and her mother. “I do not believe we have met. I am Lord Gresham.” “I’ve met your parents, my lord. I was sorry about your father’s illness and subsequent death last year. How is your mother doing?” Tabitha’s mother asked. “Thank you for your concern. Mother is doing well.” He glanced around the room. “She is here, on the opposite side, by the door.” “Ah, yes. I see her. Excuse me,” Lady Bartley said to him and Tabitha. “I will go speak with her.” Once her mother was out of hearing range, Tabitha turned to Lord Gresham. “You talked with Lord Trout?” “I did. I’m not sure his plan will work, but I’m certainly willing to try.” “You care for Lady Jane?” “I do. We live close, and I’ve cared for her many years. I believe she returns my affection, but her mother wants her to wed well and feels a mere viscount is not important enough for her daughter.”

“What we must do is pretend to be courting. If we make Lord Sterling and Lady Jane jealous, they’ll be more willing to trade places.” “You must really care for Sterling to take a chance on besmirching your reputation. You know you are playing a dangerous game, my lady?” “I know. Come. Let’s start now. I’ll take your arm, and we will promenade around the room.” He smiled and put out his arm. Tabitha studied him as they strolled along. When he smiled, it lit up his face. He was an attractive young man, probably not yet twenty-five. He and Lady Jane would make a striking pair. She’d felt some guilt over setting up this arrangement, but now that she’d met Lord Gresham it had lessened her concern. Lord Gresham and Lady Jane were both young and knew each other, so it promised to be an amiable relationship for them. They walked by the group that included Lady Jane and Lord Sterling. Lord Trout invited Tabitha and Gresham to join them. Tabitha fluttered her lashes at Lord Gresham. “Shall we, my lord, or do you prefer we continue our walk outside in the cooler air?” “Perhaps some of the others would like to join us?” Lord Gresham nodded to the group. “It is rather stuffy in here,” Sterling said. He looked at Lady Jane. “Shall we take a walk?” Lady Jane looked from Lord Gresham to Lord Sterling. Tabitha noticed Lady Jane had paled briefly when she saw Tabitha and Lord Gresham together. “I didn’t know you would be here, my lord,” Lady Jane said. “Sterling and I have been friends for several years,” Lord Gresham replied. “Oh.” Lady Jane glanced back at Sterling. Sterling put out his arm. “Shall we?” Lady Jane nodded and they followed Tabitha and Gresham through the French windows to the stone walkway.

As they strolled, the candle light faded in the distance. Only the three-quarter moon and stars lit their way. A cool breeze, carrying the scent of newly cut hay and wildflowers, brushed across Tabitha’s face. The fresh air did help to clear her head. She shivered and stepped closer to Lord Gresham. “Are you cold?” he asked. “Just a little. I forgot to bring my shawl downstairs to dinner.” “I’d be glad to escort you back inside, Miss Bartley,” Lord Sterling spoke up from behind them. “Lady Jane was just saying what a lovely night it is. Perhaps Lord Gresham would not mind walking with her while I attend to my duties as host.” Lady Jane started to speak, but Lord Gresham moved quickly to her side. “I’m quite enjoying the walk too. I’d be most pleased to be your escort, Lady Jane.” Before more could be said, Sterling had changed places with Gresham and turned Tabitha toward the house. He took her arm and pulled her close to his side as soon as the other couple had moved further along the walk. “Come with me. I know a place where we can talk.” He directed Tabitha down another walkway leading to the left side of the house. “Where are you taking me, my lord?” “Back to the house, only we’ll go to a room where I’ll make sure we’re not disturbed.” They rounded several curves in the walk, and then slipped in a side door. The passageway was dark and smelled of dust and mold. Tabitha stumbled. Sterling reached out, pulling her against his side. “Where are we?” Tabitha asked. “We’re in an older section of my home. It’s one of the old turrets. Take my hand. I’ll lead you up the stairs.” She pulled back. “I’m not sure we should go there. Mama will notice me missing especially if Lord Gresham and Lady Jane return before us.”

“We won’t stay long. It’s my library, where I write my articles on astronomy.” He pulled her along, and as they climbed the air became fresher. When they came to the top, Sterling shoved the door open. “Stay right there while I light a candle.” The light flickered, then caught. Tabitha looked around the circular room. On one side was a wooden table and chair with numerous papers piled on top. Next were several bookcases. Tabitha walked over and read titles, all dealing with the sky, stars, anything to do with his interest. She turned, and across the room were a cot, a small table, and another book lying beside a candleholder. The room smelled of him, a certain earthy, musky smell that made her breasts tighten and her body long for his touch. As though he’d read her mind, he stepped behind her. His hands came around her and brushed across her nipples. His lips kissed the side of her neck. His tongue licked a path to beneath one ear. She shivered. “You taste like the sweetest candy.” His chin brushed her hair aside as he continued exploring her skin with his mouth. His hands had moved under her gown and caressed her nipples and breasts. “Lean back against me, love.” The sound of his husky voice in her ear sent a feeling of heat and aching to her lower region. She moved back and felt the hard outline of his erection. “I want to put my cock into your warm, wet pussy and thrust in and out, claiming you for my own.” She’d never expected his coarse words to make her insides melt. She was aware of the wetness and her inner heat. Moving restlessly against him, she heard his moan. “Did I hurt you?” she asked and started to pull away. “Stay. It’s only the best kind of hurt. Turn your face to the side.” Mesmerized, she did as he said. His mouth covered hers. Now, he seemed all around her, a part of her, except for the place that ached

and pulsed for him to enter. A shrill whistle broke them apart. “What was that?” Tabitha asked. “I’m not sure, but we’ll take it as a warning. We’d better return.” “Show me the way to go to my room. I’ll get my shawl and come back from a different direction than you.” “Good idea.” He led her back down the steps and showed her how to find the corridor to go upstairs. She hurried away, her heart pounding. Her body still yearned for his attention. She didn’t just need her shawl. She needed to collect herself before meeting her mother’s watchful eye. **** Sterling caught up with Lady Jane and Gresham just before they reentered the drawing room. Lady Jane appeared flushed and shaken. She gave Sterling a slight smile, and he quickly joined her. “I’m sure you don’t mind, Gresham, if I take over. Miss Bartley went to get her shawl and I stopped by my study to check on something. Thought I saw you two walking by.” “Not at all,” Gresham relinquished Lady Jane to him. "Wait a moment before following us inside," Sterling spoke softly to Gresham. Coming in from the outside, the smell of smoke from numerous candles and too much perfume almost overwhelmed them. Lady Jane began to cough and Sterling took her to her mother then excused himself. He’d seen Lady Bartley glance from Gresham and him, before looking around the room. He almost sighed out loud when Tabitha come through the doorway from the foyer carrying her shawl. His heart raced. Tonight had been too exciting. His body still craved hers. There had to be a way for them to be together long enough for him to make love to her. Much more of this almost getting there and he’d have an attack of

apoplexy. Tabitha had joined her mother. Lady Bartley was talking to her and frowning. Once, she glanced at him. Sterling nodded his head in greeting, smiled, and began to move around the room doing his duty as host. The night seemed endless. Sterling thought the guests would never say goodnight and go to their rooms. After they did, he decided to go back to his turret study. He wouldn’t sleep, and he had a book to complete. **** The night was quiet. He made good progress and decided to blow out his candle and lay down on the cot. It seemed too far to walk to his room. Throwing off his clothes, he lay on the cool sheet and pulled up his one blanket against the chilly night air. Warmth and satin, he snuggled into the softness, his mouth instinctively finding the rosy nipples. Long, curvy legs wrapped around his, pulling him closer against her soft body. He moved his mouth higher tasting the curve between neck and shoulder, then nibbling on the tip of an earlobe. A soft sigh and shiver sent sparks down his body and hardened his cock even more. His body pressed to hers. He moved his hands through her curly hair and holding her face firmly, he ravished her mouth. When he raised his head, he leaned over and lit the one candle that sat on the table by the bed. The light shone across porcelain skin and the golden highlights in her hair, but her hazel eyes shown dark and mysterious. Lavender scent filled his nostrils. “Tell me to please not stop, and I’ll show you what all those books were written about.” He wondered, briefly, how she’d found her way back to his private library. He didn’t care. He just wanted her. “I don’t have to say anything,” she purred. She took him by surprise and pushed him over on his back. “Let me show you why.”

Her long hair brushed across his face then neck as she lowered herself until her mouth came in touch with his chest. She brushed kisses across his nipples while her hand moved lower. When her fingers circled him, he breathed deep. He saw the curiosity in her eyes. She moved still lower, where she studied his cock. Her hand caressed the head, and then she gripped him in her hand. She glanced up. “The book said the top is the most sensitive.” Her fingers lightly touched the head, and then her lips tasted the pearl drop of liquid. “Salty,” she said and gave him a saucy smile. His heart pounded almost out of his chest. Her words and actions had his blood racing through his veins. When her mouth moved down over his cock, his body rose up from the bed, and he groaned deeply. She moved back. “Did I hurt you?” “Yes, you did. Like I said before, in the best possible way.” Unable to stand another minute of not being inside her, he rolled them and spread her legs. Gasping for breath, he slowed down. She was a virgin. He must have some control. He separated her labia with trembling fingers and slid one finger just inside the slick wetness of her tight pussy. She moaned and moved restlessly under his barest of touches. He slid another finger inside and pushed them deeper. She cried out in pleasure, so he moved them in and out of her hot pussy. His hard cock ached and pulsed with each stroke. Tabitha pushed her hips harder against his touch. When he looked up and saw her glazed expression, he knew she was ready. He put his cock against the opening of her hot slick body and pushed the head inside. He tried to go slow, but when she moved, urging him on, he plunged his hard cock in all the way until his balls rested against the curve of her ass. His kiss drowned out her shout. He stilled and looked at her face. Two tears ran across her cheeks. He licked the salty liquid. “Are you all right? Did I hurt you?” “It didn’t hurt much.” She took a breath. “I think I’m all right.” Her puzzled gaze found his eyes. “Is that it? Are we finished then?” A laugh spilled out of him. “Oh no, that’s only the start.”

Now, he began to move gently at first, then faster, he pumped in and out of her. Her arms slipped around his neck, and she wrapped her legs around his hips joining him in his movements. His head spun and his breath pounded out of his chest. Harder and harder, he thrust his cock in her, clutching her bottom in his hands to keep her close against him. When his release hit, it hit hard and bright very unexpectedly. He emptied his seed inside her before the thought that he shouldn’t have set in. He’d meant to pull back at the last minute. What last minute? The world had spun away for what seemed like hours. Moving her to his side, he reached out and opened a window. Dawn shone on the horizon. She sat on the side of the bed and glanced outside. Her curly hair tumbled down her back and across her front partially hiding her breasts. Her skin flushed pink when she saw his intent look. He sat beside her and brushed her hair off her face. The candle had long burned out. “You had no trouble finding me?” “No. I thought you might be here. See, I got my way without the words you wanted.” Brazenly, she climbed out of bed naked. Her curvaceous body took his breath away. She stood in front of him and stretched. “The books said men were very visual. Do you like seeing me naked?” He reached out and ran his hand across silken skin down to the soft hair that covered her lower lips. “Very much. Shall we play some more?” She spun across the room and slipped on her gown. “I do want to learn more, but Mama will be waking, and I must be in my bed.” She tipped her head to the side. “Did you get my letter?” “I did,” he growled. “Now that I know how you make love, I must find a comparison. I have no reference to go by except my books. Do you think Lord Gresham might accommodate me?”

He was at her side in two steps and gripped her arms tightly. “You’re not serious.” “But you don’t want to marry, and I must find a husband. Especially now. Yes, I think he or Lord Trout would do fine.” With that, she ran out of the room. Her laughter flowed up the stairs as she went down. No one else would have her, she was his, and if he had to lose the wager to prove it, so be it. No other man would touch his wild, bewitching Tabby. **** Tabitha had barely slipped into her room and under the covers before she heard her door creak open. She lay still with closed eyes and hoped her mother wouldn’t notice her fast breathing. Apparently, she was satisfied because the door shut as quickly as it had opened. Tabitha breathed deep and stretched. She couldn’t believe she’d done it. After lying awake for hours, she’d decided to see if he was in the turret room. She’d just stay a short while, tempting him and then return. But, once she’d touched his warm skin and smelled the essence that was only his, she’d been lost. Her friend was right. Books could never truly convey the emotion, the feelings racing through your body. If she hadn’t talked to Anna and knew she’d done the same, Tabitha would believe there was something wrong with her, that she was a harlot, a loose woman. And, she teased him that she’d take another lover. Obviously, she lost her mind around him and said anything with no thought to her words. She put her hands up to her hot face. Her body ached in strange places, but it also still hummed with desire. Once had not been enough. She supposed, in a way, she’d won the wager. She’d seduced him. Still, she had much to learn, and she wanted him to be her teacher.

It was time to get up and dress. She couldn’t wait to see what promises the day held.

Chapter Eleven Many of the younger guests were in the dining room when Tabitha entered. She saw at a glance that Lady Jane had placed herself next to Lord Sterling, her head tipped so she looked into his eyes as he talked. A flash of jealousy speared through Tabitha. It was all she could do not to charge across the room and yank the pale blonde debutante out of her seat. She smiled at the thought. “Good morning, Miss Bartley. Won’t you join us,” Lord Gresham pointed to the seat beside him at the table where Sterling, Trout, Lady Jane, and he sat. Lady Jane barely looked in her direction, giving only a brief nod of her head. “Thank you, I will, as soon as I fill my plate with food from the sideboard. Good morning, Lady Jane, Lord Sterling, and Lord Trout.” She continued briskly by them, picked up a plate, and studied the breakfast choices. There was an assortment of drinks, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, then platters of eggs, tongue, ham, cold fowl, trout, and toast. She chose eggs, ham, and toast. When she came back to the table, Trout stood and pulled out her chair. A footman stepped forward and poured her a cup of hot chocolate. “Thank you.” She smiled at Trout then turned to Sterling. “I must commend you, Lord Sterling on the wonderful assortment of offerings for breakfast. I had a difficult time deciding what to choose.” “We have an excellent cook and housekeeper. I will tell them of your compliments.” His green eyes sparkled with mischief. “I do hope you rested well last night?” “Most assuredly, your home is elegant and comfortable, my lord.”

98

Paige Cameron

She hoped her face did not blush. He dared to poke at her in front of the others. She’d not let him have all the fun. “You look quite tired, my lord. I hope having so much company does not send you into a decline.” The laugh that burst out of him brought a smile to her lips. She’d almost forgotten the others at the table. “Really, Miss Bartley, your conversation is hardly appropriate for mixed company. I blush to think what my mother would say to hear me voice such topics.” Lady Jane pushed her lovely, tiny nose into the air. “Please, don’t be too hard on Miss Bartley. I must apologize for starting the conversation,” Lord Sterling said, a smile still lingering in his eyes. Lady Jane sniffed. “Nevertheless, a lady would find a way to discreetly change the conversation. Gentlemen are excused an occasional lapse, ladies are not,” she said looking pointedly at Tabitha. Tabitha pretended to be suitably chastened and focused her attention on her food and eating. Inside her, laughter still lurked. When Lord Gresham suggested a ride after breakfast, the group agreed it was a lovely morning, and they’d all enjoy an outing. Several other young men and women had entered the dining room and heard the suggestion. They asked to be included. They’d all meet out front in about an hour, giving them time to change into riding clothes. Lord Sterling stood. “I’ll go to the stables and have enough horses saddled and ready for us,” he said. He waved to his guests and strode out of the room. Lord Trout and Lord Gresham left soon after, leaving Lady Jane and Tabitha alone at the table. Lady Jane frowned at Tabitha. “You will not win him by being so brazen. His mother is not interested in having a mere viscount’s daughter marry him. She told my mother so just yesterday.” Tabitha took her time and finished the bite she’d been chewing

then took a drink of her hot chocolate. She studied Lady Jane’s face long enough to make the younger girl blush. “I don’t believe I’ve indicated an interest in Lord Sterling. I assume you’re talking about him since you hang on his arm constantly.” Lady Jane started to protest, but Tabitha held up her hand. “Just to make sure you don’t feel threatened, I will tell you my interest is in another gentleman.” Anger brought an ugly flush to Lady Jane’s face. She pinched her mouth in distaste before speaking. “I suppose by other gentleman you mean Lord Gresham?” “Perhaps.” “He is too enamored of me to show such a common woman any serious attention.” “But you want Lord Sterling. You can’t have all the men. And Lord Gresham has shown me some pointed attention.” She smiled. “He came over to me last night and introduced himself. I must go and change. I’m sure I’ll see you out front.” It tickled Tabitha to see the anger and confusion on Lady Jane’s face. Perhaps the lady wasn’t so sure which gentleman she preferred to court her. **** The brisk morning air made Tabitha glad she’d chosen her warmer riding habit. When she stepped outside, she saw a large group had gathered. Lady Jane, as usual stood close beside Lord Sterling. When Lord Gresham saw her, he waved a hand and started up the steps to her. “It promises to be a delightful morning for a ride. Shall we ride together?” “Yes, thank you.” She took his arm and headed down the steps. He guided her over to a brown mare. “Her name is Misty. Lord Sterling assured me she’d be the best horse for you.”

100

Lord Gresham helped her mount, then went to get his own horse. Misty tossed her head and moved restlessly. Tabitha held the reins firmly as her thoughts went to last night and Sterling. Would he find a way to get them alone? Perhaps he’d satisfied his curiosity and would center his attention on Lady Jane. She’d worried about how he’d act this morning, and then he started by teasing her. She was feeling unsettled, which was totally unlike her. Lord Sterling rode to the lead position and motioned for the others to follow. Lady Jane sat atop a dark brown mare and looked quite pretty in a blue riding habit. Under her matching bonnet, her shiny blonde curls fluttered in the breeze. Lord Gresham rode close beside Tabitha. “Shall we gradually move up to the front until we’re just behind Sterling and Lady Jane?” “I think that’s a delightful idea.” She followed his lead, and they soon managed to get to the front. The other riders rode more leisurely behind. Lord Sterling turned his head and greeted them. “Hope you both are enjoying the ride.” “It’s a most delightful day,” Tabitha said. Lady Jane gave her an angry glare then smiled sweetly at Lord Gresham. “I was just telling Lord Sterling how much his estate reminds me of home. I feel quite comfortable here.” She gave Sterling a smile and fluttered her eyelashes. Tabitha’s anger caused her to jerk on her reins. Her horse reared almost unseating her. Sterling immediately rode to her side. “Misty is new to the saddle. I should not have chosen to use her today. Let’s go back to the stable and get you a more well-trained horse.” “It’s not necessary. Misty is fine. It was my fault.” He studied her face. “No, I insist.” “I will ride on with Lady Jane,” Lord Gresham said. “You two can join us later.”

“Good. You’ve been here before, Gresham. You can lead the group until I return.” Without giving either woman a chance to comment, Sterling turned his horse around and motioned for Tabitha to join him. She frowned, but followed his direction. As soon as they were out of sight of the group, she pulled her horse’s reins and stopped. “You made me look like an incompetent rider.” “I did nothing until you were almost unseated. I must admit I never expected you to have trouble with this particular horse, but it gave me the excuse I needed to separate us from the crowd.” “We had no reason to separate. I won the wager last night. I seduced you.” “Ah, but the other part of the wager was that I must be painfully and obviously smitten with you, and I don’t believe that is apparent to our guests. I consider the wager still on.” “People are going to notice that you trade places with Lord Gresham frequently.” “No one saw the exchange last night. Now, stop talking. We’re wasting time.” He smiled and leaned across the distance between them to kiss her. Startled, she found herself moving her lips over his. “Come with me,” he whispered against her mouth. “I have something I want to show you.” Leading the way, they headed up a path through a thick hammock of trees. When they came out on the other side, Tabitha gasped at the lovely sight. Sparkling water cascaded out of a tall hill and fell into a small lake. Two snow-white swans floated regally along the blue surface. “It’s beautiful.” “One of my favorite places. Follow me.” He urged his horse forward and around the lake into a dense area of trees and shrubs. A shrill birdcall and the cascading water were the only sounds. Sterling dismounted and pulled a blanket from the pack behind his saddle. After spreading the blanket across the soft grass, he strode over to where Tabitha sat on her horse watching.

102

Paige Cameron

He reached up and pulled her into his arms. Instead of putting her down, he carried her to the blanket and knelt, gently seating her on the covering. “I have one more surprise.” He returned to the roll where he’d gotten the blanket and pulled out a bottle of wine. “No glasses. We’ll have to drink from the bottle.” He pulled the cork and handed her the wine. “I’m sure a lady like Jane would never drink directly from a bottle. Are you implying I’m not a lady, my lord?” “You’re my type of lady.” He bent forward and brushed his warm lips across her mouth. She pulled back from him and squinted. “Is this a dare? Because you know I can never walk away from a challenge.” With that said, she tipped the bottle and drank. The cool, crisp white wine tasted flowery and sweet with just a hint of tart. Sterling took the bottle from her hand, sat it down, and pulled her body tight against his. His mouth covered hers, and his tongue moved inside. He tasted, tempted, and aroused heat and desire within her. “You taste of sweet tartness. Just what I like,” he said. “You didn’t play fair. Drink some wine.” Tabitha pointed to the bottle. “I wanted to taste it on your lips.” He leaned her back until she lay flat on the ground. His teeth nibbled at her ear lobe and along her creamy white neck. “Ambrosia.” Tabitha put her arms around him and held tight, as he gradually tasted each area of her neck and the part of her shoulder he could uncover. Her heart raced and moisture seeped below from the heated desire he created with his hard body and warm mouth. He opened her jacket and his hand covered her breast. She arched her back to give him better access. “Too many clothes and not enough time,” Sterling said. His hand slipped down and under her skirt. His fingers found her clit and rubbed lightly while his mouth suckled her breast through the thin

material covering her. She reached for him and rubbed along the length of his cock. He raised his head and their eyes met. While he held her gaze, he slid one finger, then two into her heated passage. “You’re so tight and hot. Feel my cock pulse with the desire to be buried deep inside your soft pussy. You’re getting wetter, ready for me.” His words rolled through her head heightening the hunger to have him inside of her. Her insides ached with the desire to feel his throbbing erection fill her. He moved his hand. She thought he planned to stop the delectable seduction he’d started. She tightened her inner muscles around his fingers. “Please, continue. Take me now, quickly.” She began undoing the buttons on the flap of his breeches. He hesitated, then moved quickly and pulled her gown higher. Spreading her legs apart, he buried his cock deep inside her pussy in one swift move. She lifted her legs and wrapped them around his middle. He stared into her eyes. “You’re so soft and hot.” His words made her vagina contract around his hard cock. He began to move slowly almost all the way out, then pushing forward deeper and deeper. She gripped his buttocks, encouraging him to move faster building a tension inside her, a need just out of reach. He bent his head and suckled her breast, then moved his lips to her neck, his heavy breath on her skin sent shivers down her spine. When his mouth captured hers he moved his tongue in and out mimicking his movements below. Her hand moved to cup his sack and gently squeeze. He groaned and pushed once more hard against her quivering womb. A heavy ache and waves of heat rolled over her, and her body exploded with feeling. Almost immediately, he stiffened and flooded her with his hot seed. His forehead touched hers, and then he moved to her side. She glanced at him. His eyes were closed, his chest rising rapidly with

each quick breath. She wanted to reach across and run her fingertips over his strong profile. Suddenly, guilt washed over her. What was she doing? If one person saw them, her reputation would be in shreds. And yet, she seemed unable to resist him. “We have to go,” he said. He didn’t move for several more minutes, and she enjoyed lying against his strong warm body. Finally, reluctantly, he stood, straightened his clothes, then held a hand out to her. He helped adjust her gown. “You look barely presentable,” he said. His lips curved into a tempting smile. We’d better go before I weaken or we’ll never get back before the others. We’ll tell them you weren’t feeling well and didn’t want to rejoin them.” “It’s going to become more difficult to meet after this. My mother is already suspicious. I must show attention to others.” “I know you’re right. My mother seems to have her heart set on Lady Jane for her daughter-in-law.” “Do you always do what your mother wants?” Tabitha let him hear the taunting note in her voice. “Father died recently. I try not to upset her.” Tabitha stomped over to her horse. After he’d helped her mount, she frowned at him. “Then, this must be good-bye, my lord. It doesn’t matter anyway. I just realized what I said. You won the wager and tomorrow we all leave.” With that, she galloped off toward his house. She was out of the stables and walking briskly away when he caught up with her. “Wait,” he called out. She waved him away and rushed to a side door. She went in and hurried out of sight. **** “Damn.” He brushed his hands through his hair. How could he ever convince her now of his true feelings? Today, when they’d reached the heights together and her small body quivered under his,

he’d known he could never get her out of his mind or let her go out of his life. Her sweet taste, her lavender scent, and her quick, responsive, warm body filled his thoughts. No one else would do. He smiled thinking of her interests in astronomy. He’d never dreamed of finding a woman who would share that part of his life. However, a stupid wager and a silly debutante threatened to separate them. He strode into the house narrowly missing his mother carrying flowers into the hall to decorate for the dance tonight. And then, he knew what he had to do. “Mother, do you have a few minutes to talk?” “I’m very busy supervising the decorations for tonight,” she said. “This is rather urgent. Perhaps you might stop and meet me in my study. I’ll have tea prepared for us.” “You’re being very mysterious, Richard.” She studied his face. “All right, give me ten minutes, and I’ll join you.” “Thank you, Mother.” Sterling stopped one of the maids and requested tea, scones, and small watercress sandwiches. Both were his mother’s favorites. He found himself pacing his study while he waited. The maid brought the tea and left. Only a few more minutes. He wanted to be careful of his words. The last thing he wanted was to offend or hurt his mother, but this was probably the most important decision of his life. No one else could make it for him. A soft knock sent him striding across the room to open the door. “Come in, Mother.” Lady Sterling looked at him suspiciously then smiled seeing the tea and refreshments. She sank into a chair by the fireplace and sighed. “I do need this rest and food. I’m not as young as I was, and my old bones are reminding me.” She poured a cup of tea and handed it to Sterling, who’d sat across from her, then helped herself to the scones and watercress sandwiches. “I doubt you want anything to eat. This isn’t your usual choice,”

she said and smiled. “No. I ordered them especially for you.” “You’re a good son and have been a comfort these past months since we lost your father.” Her gaze darkened with grief. “Sometimes I still expect him to walk in the door bringing the smell of the outdoors, and his faithful dog, Spot, following at his heels. Poor old Spot dying so soon after your father was a double blow.” “I miss him too, Mama.” A sweet smile curved her mouth. “It’s been years since you’ve called me, Mama.” “Drink your tea and eat. We’ll talk after you’ve finished.” She studied him. “This sounds very serious. I do hope it’s what I’ve been waiting to hear.” She picked up her teacup and sipped, then took a bit of her sandwich. “Delightful.” Sterling braced himself. It was not what she hoped to hear. She’d be disappointed and sad. He hated seeing the sadness in her eyes. She and his father had been happy, often joking with each other, their love evident to him and friends and acquaintances. She’d not expect her only child to disappoint her. Still, he had no financial problems, so there was no need for him to marry for connections or money, thank goodness. After she got to really know Tabby, she’d love her. He hoped. Tabby was a bit unconventional. He coughed to cover the laugh that almost came out. “There,” Lady Sterling set her teacup and plate aside. “I’m rested and fed, now what is this important meeting about?” she smiled expectantly. “It is not what you are expecting or hoping, Mother. I have developed a deep regard for one of the ladies here at our party. In fact, the main reason I suggested this weekend was to have more time in her presence to be sure of my feelings.” “Oh, that is exactly what I’d hoped,” his mother said. “Lady Jane will make you a wonderful, proper wife. I’ll be happy to have her for

a daughter-in-law.” Sterling put up his hand to stop her from further exclamations. “Mama, Lady Jane drives me to distraction. She is boring and frivolous. I’d be miserable married to her.” Stark surprise covered his mother’s face. “Then who? No. Never her.” “I assume by her, Mother, you mean Miss Bartley? I don’t understand why you would not like her, but I do intend to ask her to be my wife.” His mother’s face flushed red. “She is on the shelf, past her prime. I fear you’d never have an heir married to her. Also, she is a known bluestocking and always has her nose in a book. Really, Richard, you can do much better. If Lady Jane does not please you, then take longer to decide. Meet more of the eligible young ladies.” Sterling left his chair and knelt in front of his mother. He covered her hands with his. “I love you very much, Mama. But, I have to make this decision because I have to live with it.” He stopped and glanced around the room. “I still smell father’s tobacco when I enter this room. When I walk into the drawing room, I see the two of you laughing, teasing. I had even seen him steal a kiss when you both thought no one was around.” “Your father and I have nothing to do with this,” his mother protested. “You have everything to do with it. Don’t you want me to have the same happy marriage I’ve observed all my life between my parents? I think you do. We don’t need for me to marry an earl’s daughter. Tabitha makes me happy, makes me laugh. She’s interested in astronomy.” He smiled. “How perfect is that? Please, be happy for me. But, even if you won’t, I have to do this, for myself.” “I believe that’s the most words you’ve said to me since you were a little boy and showed me a lizard you’d found in the garden. I got a dissertation all about lizards.” She smiled and brushed his hair off his forehead. “Not that I’m comparing my future daughter-in-law to a

lizard. I will try to hide my disappointment and be suitably happy for you.” Her hand slid down his cheek. “You are right, if you feel this way you should marry her. I’m sure she must have many good qualities that will make her a good wife, although to me they are hidden.” “Thank you, Mama. I do believe you’ll come to love her.” “Perhaps after you have an heir.” His mother raised an eyebrow. “I intend to devote my attention to that cause.” Lady Sterling slapped his hand. “Watch your words around your mother, young man.” Softening her voice, she asked, “Will you make the announcement this evening?” “No, there’s not enough time. I have to ask her first. Tomorrow at breakfast, before our guests leave I will announce our upcoming wedding, unless she refuses me.” “She wouldn’t dare!” “Oh yes, she might dare anything.” **** “Tabby, come in here.” Lady Bartley motioned her daughter into her bedroom. “Sit. I noticed you coming from the stables and Lord Sterling following behind.” She frowned at Tabitha. “I thought you left with the group?” “I did. I was riding along side Lord Gresham, but my horse acted up and almost threw me. Lord Sterling insisted on escorting me back. I planned to get a different horse and rejoin the group, but decided to have some quiet time in the library. I was just going to change.” Tabitha glanced down at her riding habit. Hopefully she didn’t look too mussed or her mother’s suspicions would bring more questions. Lady Bartley walked to the window and looked out. “He seemed to be hurrying after you, and you appeared upset,” she said and turned to face Tabitha. “I told him I could handle my horse. He didn’t believe me.” She

pretended a pout and felt sick in her stomach. She hated lying to her mother, but there was no other recourse. The scandalous truth would cause serious repercussions. “He does seem to care for you. Perhaps he plans on making an offer after this weekend.” Tabitha shook her head. “No, Mama. His mother is determined to have Lady Jane as her daughter-in-law. She’s made that obvious to everyone. Lord Sterling would not upset his mother.” “Then what about Lord Gresham?” “Handsome, very polite and will make some lady a devoted husband, but he sees me more as a friend.” “I fear you are right. There is a certain look in a man’s eyes when he is intrigued and interested in a specific lady. He doesn’t look at you that way.” Lady Bartley sat and studied her daughter. “I see that spark in your eyes and in Lord Sterling’s when you just get near each other.” “Don’t get your hopes up, Mama. I’m afraid I shall be the daughter who remains home to care for you and Papa in your old age.” Tabitha stood to leave. Her mother hugged her. She breathed in the familiar scent of sweet heather and violets, a fragrance that would always remind her of Mama. “Heavens, let’s not despair yet. There must be an eligible lord that will find you fascinating and offer for you. This takes time, and you only recently put forth a serious effort to find him. There is always Lord Trout.” Tabitha walked to the adjoining door and opened it. She smiled at her mother from across the room. “You were right, Mama. His heart was broken long ago. He won’t take another chance on being hurt. He teases and is a wonderful friend, but the one time we almost talked seriously, I briefly saw the sadness in his eyes. He changed the subject. We never broached it again. “So, you will have to accept having me at home.” Trying to smile cheerfully, Tabitha went into her room and closed the door behind

her. She leaned against the cool wood and breathed deeply to fight off the tears. Tonight was the ball, the comet flew across the sky at two in the morning, and she wasn’t going to see it. She’d lost the wager, but more importantly, she’d lost her heart. She hadn’t planned on that.

Chapter Twelve Tabitha chose to come downstairs after the ball had started. Few people noticed her enter the crowded ballroom that had been decorated with all types of flowers from roses to small vases of violets. The sweet scent permeated the air. She slipped around groups talking and managed to find a spot at the edge of the dance floor. A vigorous country dance was in progress. “Miss Tabitha, you didn’t rejoin us this afternoon. We missed you. I hope you were not injured when your horse reared?” Lord Gresham said. “No, I’m fine. Did you enjoy the ride?” His dark eyes twinkled. “I did, and I believe Lady Jane did as well.” “Then you are hopeful about the outcome of your visit here this weekend?” “Yes, thanks to Trout’s ingenious plan.” Tabitha did not want to spoil his evening, so decided to make no comment on her expectations regarding Lord Sterling and Lady Jane, but her heart felt heavy in her chest. After the music stopped, couples began to walk toward the sides of the dance floor. Tabitha saw Sterling escort Lady Jane to her mother. She turned away and tried to think of something to say to Lord Gresham. “Are you all right?” Lord Gresham asked. “Yes, but if you’ll excuse me, I need to find my mother. She came downstairs ahead of me.” “Certainly,” Lord Gresham gave her a slight bow, but from his

worried expression, she knew she hadn’t fooled him. Seeing Lady Bartley across the room sitting with several other ladies, Tabitha began to walk in that direction. “Miss Bartley.” She started to pretend she didn’t hear his voice, but then decided she was acting silly. She stopped and turned to face him. “Good evening, Lord Sterling. I must compliment your mother and your staff on the beautiful decorations.” She moved her hand to indicate the flowers and glowing lights of numerous candles. He grinned that devilish smile that always made her heart race. How dare he be so, so, happy. “I will tell my mother of your kind compliments. But, the reason I stopped you was to request the next dance.” He put out his arm, “Shall we?” She hesitated. She didn’t want to touch him, and have the familiar heat and longing stir inside her. He waited patiently only raising one eyebrow, that silly smile still on his face. “All right.” “I’m happy to see your enthusiasm,” he said. The smile never changed. He led her out to the center where another group formed. As they stood waiting for their turn to start, Sterling leaned his head closer. “Surely, you’re not still annoyed with me from earlier today?” “I was not annoyed.” Tabitha turned her nose up. His hearty laugh made several couples turn in their direction. “I see nothing funny, and you are bringing attention to us. Your future bride will be more than annoyed, she’ll be angry.” “My future bride is already annoyed,” he said, cryptically. Puzzled, she stared into his dark green eyes. Tonight, he looked especially handsome in his black pantaloons and jacket with an ivory vest. Tabitha fought the desire to touch his silky black hair. The strong planes of his face were etched by the soft light. His eyes seemed to soften as she stared, but she was sure she’d been mistaken. The line moved, and soon they were following the steps of the fast

country dance. Afterwards, he walked her across the room to her mother. “Thank you for the lovely dance, Miss Bartley.” He nodded to her mother and disappeared out of sight. Tabitha discovered she wasn’t going to be allowed to sit out of sight and be a wallflower. Several gentlemen asked her to dance, including Lord Trout. “You have enjoyed the weekend,” he asked. “It has been very pleasant.” “Ah, that bad? I’d hoped you’d won the wager, but I’ve heard nothing from either of you.” “Forget it, please. It was a stupid idea.” “I thoroughly agree. I’m glad you’ve both come to your senses.” Tabitha smiled. “You are a good friend, Lord Trout.” “Well, at least I’ve brought a smile to your face.” He swung her around rapidly and she laughed. Too bad his heart belonged to someone else. Tabitha knew he’d be a good husband. But, whoever hurt him, he hadn’t forgotten her. Several dances later and just before the break for refreshments, Sterling again asked her to dance. Surprised, she nodded, and they walked onto the dance floor. Her heart sank when she realized it was a waltz. Being held close in his arms, probably for the last time, sent a sharp pain to her chest. “You’re very quiet, Tabby.” “Please don’t call me by that silly name.” “I love that silly name.” He tightened his grip on her waist, bringing her body more tightly against him. He whispered in her ear, “I love when you wrap your body around mine.” She shivered and pushed him back. Lady Jane danced by with Lord Gresham and gave her an angry glare. “Watch out, Lady Jane is not pleased.” There was that teasing smile again. What was wrong with the man? There was nothing funny about breaking her heart. Of course, he didn’t know, thank goodness, that her heart was involved. The

music stopped, and Tabitha turned and stalked off not waiting for him to escort her. She’d love to leave the ball early, but refused to let anyone, especially Lady Jane, suspect she had a broken heart. What started out as a lark had certainly gone all wrong. Wrong! What if she had a child? She stumbled at the thought. Sterling reached out and caught hold of her arm. “Slow down. I fully intend to escort you back to your mother. And don’t look so sad. Everything will work out, you’ll see.” Tabitha glared at him. “I am not sad. This is a delightfully, pleasant evening.” “Then, I shudder to see your reaction when you are not having a good time.” He bowed and walked briskly away. She watched as he joined Trout and Lord Grisham. “Your face is flushed. Sit down and cool off,” her mother directed. “Are you feeling unwell?” “No, Mama. The room is stuffy and smoky from all these candles. I’m fine,” she lied. Even though she danced most of the dances, the rest of the evening dragged by. When the announcer said the next dance was the last, Tabitha sighed with relief. She glanced across the room and saw Lady Jane smiling expectantly in Sterling’s direction. Her expression changed to surprise and irritation when it was apparent he wasn’t headed toward her, but to Tabitha. Tabitha’s heart fluttered. She remembered his deep voice saying, “If I find myself so enthralled with you that I not only seduce you, but find myself unable to resist being with you, I will announce it by asking you to dance three times at the same ball.” She smiled into laughing green eyes as he arrived, stood before her, and then did a low bow. “My lovely, glorious Tabby, may I have this dance?” “I’ve been waiting all night, no, all my life for this dance, my lord.” Her mother, sitting slightly behind where Sterling stood, glanced

up at the sound of his laugh. Tabitha gave her a quick smile as Sterling took her hand and pulled her onto the dance floor. Several people turned and stared. Lady Jane was evidently not the only one to realize this was their third dance. He swung her into the waltz, and she floated around the room, her golden gown swirling around her. Later, she’d swear her feet never touched the floor. Her heart beat furiously in her chest. “It seems I have lost the wager, Miss Bartley.” “No. You won yesterday.” “But, this is a much more serious loss. Asking a lady to dance three times, well some say it is almost equal to an offer. Tonight, the comet will be streaking across the sky. Will you join me and view the sight through my telescope?” “I’d be very pleased to accept your most kind offer, Lord Sterling.” He whirled her around in circles and dips. Desire flooded through her body sending sparkles of happiness rushing through her veins. She was disappointed when the music stopped. He glanced around the room as people said good night and began to leave. “Meet me as soon as you can. Go to the door to the tower room, turn left, then right and follow the corridor to the end. Up those steps is where I keep my equipment for viewing the stars.” He squeezed her hand, and she nodded before rejoining her mother. “That was certainly a surprise. You should have reminded him very nicely that it was most improper for you to dance a third time with him.” “But he asked so nicely, Mama. I couldn’t resist.” “Humph, from what I saw in his eyes and yours, I will expect an offer to come soon, or I shall give that young man a severe dressing down.” Tabitha decided not to respond. She must be careful. She was treading dangerous ground, and Mama never missed a slip in words or

116

expressions. Mama watched her go into her room before going into her own. Tabitha worried she’d have Hilda standing guard at her door. She waited much longer than she wanted too, until she opened the adjoining door and heard her mother snoring. She peeked out in the hall. Everything was quiet, no one stirring. Creeping along the corridor, she barely breathed until she turned into the last long walkway. At the end, trembling with excitement and hope, she started up the stairs. **** Sterling left the dance and hurried to prepare for his Tabby. She’d been hurt and angry with him tonight. He came close to telling her his plans when he said everything would be all right. He’d held back because he wanted tonight to be perfect for her and him. Something they’d always remember. But, as an hour went by, he grew tense. Perhaps, he’d waited too long to express his feelings. He paced around the small area filled with his telescope and a table and chair where he sat and made his notes. Tonight he’d made a pallet of soft blankets and pillows to one side, and the table held a bottle of champagne and two glasses. Relief flooded over him when he heard footsteps on the stairs. He opened the door and watched as she climbed the last two steps. “Welcome to my observatory.” Tabitha entered and glanced around. “How wonderful to have your own private space to view the heavens. I’m quite excited to see the comet.” “We haven’t much time. Come here and I’ll show you how to adjust the focus on the telescope.” With his arms around her, he positioned his hands over hers and showed her how to move the controls very lightly. “Is that clearer for you?” She nodded yes. “How beautiful the stars are up close.”

“Watch for the comet it will be coming out of the east.” “Don’t you want to see it first?” “No. Comets fly by fast. I’ve seen others. This one is for you, my love.” He slid his hands from hers and along her arms. His cock came to full attention and pulsed with a demand for him to bury himself inside her warmth. He grinned when she wriggled her bottom against him. He pulled her hair to the side and nibbled at her ear lobe, and then kissed her neck. “I hate to ask you to stop, but you’re distracting me. I don’t want to miss the comet.” “You’ll have to put up with me. I can’t keep my hands off of your seductive body.” She jerked. “There it is. Oh, it’s so beautiful, flaming, and bright. He saw the brief flash as it crossed the sky and then it was gone. She turned around, her body pressed against his. “Seeing the comet was wonderful, all I’d hoped for.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. “Now, you may continue.” He nuzzled her neck bringing that sweet giggle that sent hot desire swirling along his veins. “I fully intend to, continue that is. Let me help you out of those clothes. Well, what do we have here?” He ran his hand along her bare back as he unbuttoned her gown. She turned her head to glance at him, an impish grin on her face. “I thought I’d save time and take off everything but my gown.” He rubbed his rock hard cock against her buttocks. “I need to get out of my clothes now.” He let her gown slip to the floor and stood back. Tabitha turned and began pulling his shirt out of his pantaloons. “Let me help you, my lord.” Her soft hands brushing against his abdomen made him ache to bury himself in her tight pussy. She pushed his pantaloons down and moved her body with them until her mouth was right there breathing soft breaths across his cock. Her small hands cupped his balls as she

took his cock into the warmth of her mouth. He buried his hands in her golden brown curls and groaned as she sucked on his cock. He took deep ragged breaths and thought surely his heart would burst out of his chest. Gently, he stopped her. “I want to be inside you before I release, love.” He leaned down and picked her up placing her on the pallet he’d made. “Wait here.” Walking across to the table, he poured two glasses of champagne and brought them with him. “Have a glass.” The bubbles shone golden in the light of the one candle he’d lit. “Champagne goes right to my head. I can’t be responsible for my actions,” she warned. “Sounds wonderful. Drink the whole glass.” He clicked his crystal flute to hers. “I have something to give you to help you remember this night.” He crossed the room again and opened a drawer. **** Tabitha sipped her drink and watched puzzled as he pulled out a large brightly wrapped package. The bubbles from her champagne tickled her nose. Her body hummed with desire. She swallowed around a lump in her throat when he turned. He was gorgeous. Hard muscles stretched along the length of his tall body. The light cast a warm glow over his skin, and his silky black hair glistened. His green eyes dazzled her, shining directly into hers. He sat beside her in all his naked glory and handed her the package. “Open it.” Nervous, her fingers fumbled with the ribbon. “Why did you stop? What is this?” “You’ll see.” He grinned. “Right after you and your mother arrived, she came to call on me in my study to return the gifts I’d sent you.” He stopped as she uncovered the book and the fan. “Oh,” she hugged them to her. The metal binding of the book was

cold against her bare breasts. “I so wanted to keep them. She wouldn’t even let me look inside the book.” “She was right. They were inappropriate. Let me see if I can remember what she said.” As though those the words weren’t seared on his brain. “This is close to her words, ‘A man gives a young woman these types of gifts for one of two reasons. Either he has plans to ask her to marry him or to be his mistress.’ Then, she asked which I was considering for you.” “I can’t believe she said that.” “She mostly definitely did. We have two strong-minded mothers. I’m glad, even though it meant we had to find more creative ways to be together. Thank goodness, Lord Gresham kept jumping in to take care of Lady Jane.” “To be honest, that was part of a plan Lord Trout and I had, to make you jealous. It seems Lord Gresham is enamored of Lady Jane and was very happy to join in with us.” “You didn’t really think I’d ever seriously consider asking that silly girl to marry me, did you?” “It did pass through my mind. Your mother would be pleased. But you didn’t tell me why you are giving me these gifts. Do you think I’d accept an offer to be your mistress? I’m not that fearful of being on the shelf. I can find a pleasant gentleman to marry me.” Sterling choked on his drink when she said mistress, then fire came into his eyes. He removed his glass and hers to the side and leaned over her. “If you even think of marrying someone else, I’d have to challenge him to a duel.” His body lay over hers, and his hands cupped her face. She started to respond, but his mouth covered hers in a fiery, plundering kiss. Nimble fingers slid down and covered her breasts. Her nipples tightened at his touch. His mouth followed the descent of his hands. Lips caressed her breasts, and he opened his mouth and suckled on one tip, as his hand moved down and parted her lower lips. He rubbed across her clitoris. She moaned and moved her body even closer to him.

120

“Like that my love?” His eyes glinted with mischief. “I will have you begging for me before this is over.” “Don’t talk, just do it.” He chuckled and moved to kiss her most intimate area. She was wet and hungry for his touch. His lips teased her nub. Her body bowed, and she moved her head restlessly on the pillow. “Yes, yes, my love.” **** Damn, she felt so good and tasted like sweet honey. He raised his head to watch her expressions as he placed one finger inside her. Her wild, curly hair, shiny brown with gold mixed, spread across the white pillowcase. His finger gently moved out then back in deep. He’d never felt this hard, this hungry for any other woman. Each time, his need seemed to peak higher. He spread her legs and put his pulsing cock against her wet pussy. “Look at me,” he demanded. Eyes glazed with desire focused on his face. “I never wanted you for my mistress.” He began to enter slowly his thick cock gradually spreading her wider. He barely held onto his thoughts when her heated pussy clenched him tight. “I think, from the very first when you came down those stairs, you stole my heart. I won’t settle for anything less than marrying you.” She moved against him urging him to bury himself deep in her trembling sheath. “I’m waiting for an answer my love. Will you marry me?” She grabbed his hips and surged hard against him bringing him fully into her heat. Her body moved up and down, and he forgot the question only seeking the release. His teeth nipped at her breast. He slowed the pace gliding out and then in, very slowly. His teeth clenched with the holding back and sweat formed on his brow. He wanted to finish, and yet, he also wanted to prolong the aching need, the fiery desire, his breath came in harsh gasps. Tabby met every

stroke. Her hands gripped his buttocks. Then, she moved her one hand and gently cupped his balls. “Ah, love,” he shouted as he filled her with his seed. Drained, he lay over her for a second, and then moved to her side. Barely able to turn his head, he glanced at her. “I do hope that was a yes.” A giggle, followed by cool liquid running across his body made him jump. Tabitha lay over him pouring the rest of her champagne on his chest. Her tongue licked at the liquid sending warm blood sweeping through his veins. In between each lick, he heard the words. “Yes, yes, yes.” He rolled her over. “I believe we need to celebrate.” His champagne poured over her. He sipped the liquid that had pooled between her luscious breasts. “I don’t think this has ever tasted so delicious.” He raised his head. “You know, love, if the world knew about us, they’d say this was a very scandalous seduction. What they wouldn’t know is that you did most of the seducing.” “I did not. Well, it was even.” He laughed. “I’ll agree—to make you happy.” His face sobered. “My goal from now on is to see you stay happy.” “Your mother isn’t going to like this.” “I talked with her before the dance. She’s accepting. She’ll come to love you as much as I do or, well, almost as much, once she knows you better.” “You still have to talk with Papa.” “Surely, you don’t think your parents will have a problem with me as a son-in-law?” “Mama will sigh with relief. She suspects we’ve been up to no good.” Tabitha wrinkled her brow. “I wonder why she hasn’t made it more difficult. She could have had Hilda sleep in my room.” “I suspect she saw what was happening before we did. She is quite frightening when she’s mad,” he said. “Yes, so you’d better be good to me.”

His mouth kissed each breast, and then his tongue tickled her belly button. His cock stiffening so soon surprised him, but he wasn’t complaining. He spread her legs and put the head of his cock at her opening. “Is this good, my Tabby?” She moved her fingers through his chest hair and rubbed his nipples. His heart pounded again. He had a brief thought that he might have a heart attack if he kept this up, but all thoughts fled when one soft hand cupped his balls and squeezed. “This is very good,” she said. Her hot, wet pussy welcomed him as he buried himself deep inside her. The sight of her glowing skin and pink lips sent him surging hard against her womb. Her body rose against his and a soft yell passed her lips as she clenched him tightly. “Ah love, I think you might kill me yet.” He barely said the words before his hot seed flowed inside her. Minutes later, he noticed the lightening of the room. He jerked up. “We have to get you back. I don’t want anyone making remarks about my future wife.” He stood, pulled on his clothes, then helped her into her gown. “I’d like to make our announcement at breakfast.” “Papa isn’t here, but you can ask Mama what she thinks.” “Good. I’ll change and try to meet with her before everyone gathers to eat. They’ll all be leaving shortly afterwards.” “Maybe, you can travel home with us and speak with Papa.” “An excellent idea and don’t plan on a long time between now and the wedding. After this weekend, we’d better marry soon, or members of the Ton will be counting on their fingers when our child is born.” “You think I might be in the family way?” He kissed her forehead. “We have certainly been trying hard enough. Go. Hurry.” He grabbed her hand as she started out the door. “I love you.” She ran back and flung her body against his. “I love you, my scandalous seducer.” She rushed out, and he listened to her steps until

they were gone. **** The sudden wedding between Lord Sterling and Miss Bartley was the talk of the Ton. Tabitha laughed about the gossip. Both her parents had been relieved and happy with their decision to wed. His mother, although not overjoyed, had been pleasant. Mama and his mother were not fools and agreed to the quick, quiet wedding. Three months later, Tabitha joined her husband for breakfast. She loved starting the day looking across at him. Sterling lowered the paper and leaned over to kiss her. “You look as beautiful as usual, my love.” “Thank you, Lord Sterling.” She often teased him using his proper name when they were alone. “Is there any interesting news in the paper this morning?” “Funny, you should ask. Another couple has taken our wedding news out of the spotlight. According to the gossip sheet, the Ton is abuzz about the elopement of Lady Jane Potter and Lord Harold Gresham. Her mother was reported as first appearing extremely displeased, but now talks as though she’d planned the whole thing. Of course, the on-dit is that a baby will soon arrive at both our houses.” Tabitha smiled. “Sometimes the gossips are right.” Sterling reached out and patted her stomach. “I assume you are feeling better this morning?” “Hopefully, the worst of the morning sickness is gone.” Tabitha glanced down at her slightly rounded stomach, and then up at her husband. “We are very lucky, my love. And we’ve managed to please your mama. She smiled at me yesterday and offered to help me redecorate the nursery.” “See I told you she’d come to love you.” “She loves that I’m increasing, but that’s enough for now.” “You really do look delightful this morning. Since you are feeling

well, perhaps we might visit the observatory to see if you can find any stars. No one ever disturbs us there.” “What a wonderful idea, Lord Sterling. Is that a wager for me or you?” Her impish grin warmed his heart. “I never wager with a sure winner, my love.”
